POLICE BRUTALITY, UNLAWFUL ASSAULT, PHYSICAL ATTACK, INJUSTICE, INTIMIDATION, HARRASMENT AND INJURY ON THE PERSON OF MISS. OLANIYAN – BODEMOJISOLA CECILIA
We are Solicitors to Miss. Olaniyan – Bode Mojisola Cecilia staff of the First Bank of Nigeria Plc hereinafter referred to as our client and on whose mandate and legal instruction we write you this petition against four (4) men (Policemen led by one Mr. Yusuf) of your establishment along the Adeniji Adele Road, Lagos Island, Lagos on the 5th February, 2019 wherein they intimidated, harassed, assaulted and battered our client causing her injuries on her right leg.
It is our brief that subsequently upon the unlawful assault, our client was dragged and handcuffed to the Adeniji Adele Police Station and to her greatest surprise the other policemen around the station stated calling her names; because of the bleeding and loss of blood our client fainted in the station but was resuscitated at the emergency unit of the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island, Lagos State upon been placed on oxygen. We herewith attach the medical certificate issued by the hospital (Doctor Ozumba) who attended to our client.
It is our brief that our client on the said 5th February, 2019 boarded a tricycle (popularly known as Keke Marwa) from No. 144 Adeniji Adele Road going to Obalende at about 8am, whilst they were on their way a Toyota Saloon car with four (4) men in mufti hit the tricycle our client was on board and our client spoke out that the driver of the vehicle should stop hitting the tricycle and immediately the driver whom our client later identified as Yusuf alighted from the car angrily and started harassing and threatening to deal with our client.
It is our brief that immediately he approached our client having alighted from the car, our client discovered that he was smelling of alcohol and our client covered her nose and that got him infuriated and he then assaulted and battered our client calling her names and asked the other three (3) men to hand over his handcuffs to him as he will deal with her.

While this was going on, other cyclists plying and operating on the route and within the neighborhood gathered round them to intervene that our client was just a female and why would he be assaulting our client; this event also attracted people around the environs but they had to disperse and flee for their dear life when the said Mr. Yusuf brought out a gun and corked it.
It is our brief that our client was dragged out of the tricycle by the said Yusuf and his men and her leg struck the iron in the tricycle and as such she had a deep cut and started bleeding.
The Policemen then arrested and took away the tricyclist and his tricycle. Mr. Yusuf handcuffed our client and dragged her into the Toyota Saloon car and was taken to Adeniji Adele Central Police Station.
While our client was there Mr. Yusuf had intimated his colleagues who also battered and humiliated our client calling her all sorts of vulgar names.
It was then the DPO of the station came out and appealed to our client to calm down and make a statement when she then fainted and was rushed to the emergency unit of the General Hospital, Lagos.
Prior to her been fainted, she tried to make calls to inform her family and Mr. Sunny Irabor of the event and take photographs of her leg bleeding when the said Mr Yusuf and one Police woman slapped her and forcefully snatched her Infinix Note 5 and the screen of the phone got damage.
Our client also informed us that when she regained her consciousness she requested that her younger sister should go to the station to retrieve her belongings but her sister was only given her Infinix Note 5 phone while the Infinix Note 4 could not be retrieved from the police as they claim that they could not find it.
Our client has also lost her jewelries worth Twenty Four Thousand Five Hundred Naira (N24, 500.00) bought in 2014. Our Client has since then been responsible for the medical bills of the said policeman and his cohort.
The said Yusuf has also been threatening our client’s uncle who came to the station.
We therefore write this petition that a thorough investigation is done on this brutality and abuse of office and the said policemen be brought to justice.
Thank you.
