Nigeria’s Federal Commissioner for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, Ms. Sadiya Umar Farouq, on Wednesday, July 19, led management staff of the commission for a courtesy call to the office of the Senate President, Mr. Bukola Saraki.

In the visit was entrenched a discussion which centered around how to strengthen the Refugee Commission’s capacity to coordinate and monitor the activities of the various MDA’s that are involved in providing humanitarian relief and administering livelihood programs.

Bearing the issues in the North East in mind, Saraki further noted that it is crucial for the National Assembly and other relevant Ministries, Department, and Agencies (MDAs) who work on humanitarian and migration issues, to coordinate their responses to these issues by exchanging information about funding needs, service gaps and policy issues.

He however concluded that “the Senate will remain totally committed to working with the Refugee to Commission to ensure that a framework is developed that will allow us to reduce and respond to the increasing incidences of forced displacement resulting from ethnic, religious, economic and boundary conflicts, various government decisions (local and international), natural and man-made disasters.”
