Wednesday 10th November 2021 was a great day, as the Methodist Theological Institute, Sagamu in Ogun State honoured Deaconess Adetoun Adepero Olubi and 14 other eminent Nigerians at its 70th Anniversary celebration.
The ageless Aso-Oke Queen, Deaconess Olubi who is now in her 70s’ was honoured with the highly coveted award of Excellence as an Ambassador of Deaconess Order and Exemplary Motherhood.
She is an elegant woman, whose dress sense is always on point. She is the boss of Super Q Aso-Oke, a top Aso-Oke fashion brand in Nigeria. She is a lover of God and her dedication to the work of God through the Methodist Church is unrivalled. No wonder she tops the list of Nigerians that were given the prestigious ambassadorial award.
She joined the likes of the Prelate of Methodist Church of Nigeria, His Eminence, Dr Samuel Emeka Kanu Uche; His Eminence, Dr Sunday Coffie Mbang; His Eminence, Dr Ola Makinde; Sir Olaniwun Ajani; Most Reverend Lawrence Sanda Ayoade Ladigbolu and Most Reverend Michael Kehinde Stephen.
There are others like Sir Kesington Adebukunola Adebutu; Very Reverend Magdalene Idowu Tawiah Boyo; Sir Ademola Aladekomo; Sir Hassan Olusola Odukale and Dame Eunice Olayinka Obaleye. There was also Reverend Mother Esther Abimbola Ajayi, the Wife of the Deputy Governor of Benue State, Dame Mary Abounu and the wife of former Oyo State Governor, Chief Mrs Florence Ajimobi.
The award celebration was a glamorous one. It put the ancient town of Sagamu on standstill as dignitaries stormed the land to felicitate with Deaconess Olubi and other award recipients. Friends, family members, business associates, church and community associations among other well-wishers were fully on the ground to join in the celebration galore.
City People’s Reporter, JAMIU ABUBAKAR had a chat with Deaconess Olubi where she affirmed her devotion to the work of God. She also revealed why she dresses in a unique way, particularly with her signatory hat.
How do you feel about today’s celebration and the huge turn-out of those that came to felicitate with you as Iya Ijo?
I feel overwhelmed. It’s just like when you are with God everybody will love you. Psalm 1 says you will be like a crop planted by the side of a river and brings forth its fruits in seasons. So it’s evidence of Christ in me.
Standing at the wall of fame with her Excellency, Mrs Ajimobi, what was running in your mind?
It’s still Grace of God. You can’t achieve anything without the grace of God. It’s not by power. The Bible says “eyan ole ri oun koun gba afi bi a ba fun lati Ode Orun wa. It’s ordained. It’s given to me by God. It’s not my power. You don’t work for it, you don’t earn it.
What does today’s award mean to you?
Grace does everything. Grace brings light in the darkness. That I should continue to work hard for God! That I should continue to work so that I can gain eternity!
Super Q is over 40 years, how have you been sustaining it?
It’s the Grace of God. Grace does everything. Everything is God’s grace. Your power cannot do it. My Business has made me to know all the heads of state, all the ministers’ wives. Mrs Ajimobi is an ex-first lady. I met her through Super Q and a lot of them like that.
How did you make your Aso Oke business meet up the demand of the day?
It is the grace of God. Grace brings light in the darkness
What is the most challenging period you ever had in the business?
Business is challenging, success is challenging, staying upright is challenging and it’s the grace of God. It was tough but the boat didn’t capsize. On the Christ solid rock I stand.
Your stylish appearance at the church earlier today is superb, most especially your signatory hat, what does it signify?
I love good things. I love dressing well and I like unique dressing. I don’t go with the trend. I’m a very conservative person but I dress very well.
What’s your word of advice to young entrepreneurs?
Stay focused. Believe in God. There would be ups and downs. When you stay focused, you conquer.
