What Is Your First Major Money Lesson? – Sola Adesakin

Hi Friend,

Yesterday, I put up a tweet asking how folks learnt their first major Money lesson.

My question was:

How, or from whom did you learn your first major money lesson?

Parental Advice, A Book, From an expert, Through a course, Discussion with a friend(s), Your spouse, Social Media, Hard Knock of Life

Let me tell you my own story on how I learnt my first major Money lesson.

It was through the Hard Knock of Life despite being a Chartered Accountant.

I was earning so well on a job that I enjoyed doing, but at a point, I felt Management( a one-man structure) took the wrong stance on a project we executed and I took it personally, choosing to resign.

You see, I didn’t have any savings; small or substantial, no definite job offer anywhere, no concrete plans for the next one year, no emergency funds, but I was confident my many qualifications would land me a job within one month.

I was wrong!   That happened to be one of the costliest and silliest decisions I ever made before now.

From earning a good salary to having no salary and then no savings whatsoever. It was a dark but turning point for me! That experience produced the very astute financial coach you are reading from today.

My First Major Money Lesson was: Prioritize savings, don’t spend all you earn, money is a defence and when you save it, it saves you. When I teach personal finance, I am not teaching from textbook knowledge, I don’t teach just from what experts or the rule of thumb say;I teach from a place of deep experience and those who practice what I teach have results to show for it.

Looks like I am bragging right…..Lol! I am glad however that financial literacy awareness has increased over the years and everyone can learn how to manage their finance from different sources. We are the financially literate generation and I know our children will do much better!

I detailed some of my money experiences; then and now in the “40 Frugal Rules For Your Journey To Financial Freedom” and the Business Lessons I have practiced and learnt in   “The Real Profit”.  Grab your copies at www.smartstewards.ecwid.com and don’t make some the same money mistakes I made?

I have designed courses on personal finance (debt management, 3-month accountability program, personal finance management) and business finance that will help you navigate your way in the world of finance. You can find them at http://smart-stewards.thinkific.com/
