In recent times, a new wave of dynamic and fast-rising actresses has emerged, redefining the Yoruba film industry with their talent, versatility, and resilience. These actresses have proven their worth through remarkable performances, compelling productions, and passion for filmmaking.

Some have overcome obstacles like family opposition and industry struggles, staying committed to their dreams. Others have made a name for themselves by producing and starring in hit films, while some have expanded into entrepreneurship, seamlessly managing multiple roles. With their interesting storylines, strong acting, and engaging presence, these women are shaping the future of Yoruba cinema.

Now, let’s take a closer look at 20 fast-rising Yoruba actresses making waves and leaving an indelible mark in Nollywood.

 

(1) DAMILOLA ONI

Damilola Oni officially joined Nollywood in 2018 after years of stage performances. Her passion for acting began in childhood, nurtured through church drama groups, cultural performances in secondary school, and theatre productions at the University of Ibadan, where she studied linguistics. Though her father initially opposed her acting career, he later embraced it after seeing her success as a presenter.

Her journey into Nollywood began when she landed a TV presenting job with Africa Magic in 2017. From there, she convinced the production company to test her acting skills, which led to more roles. She did not abandon broadcasting for acting and still plans to return to presenting.

As the firstborn and only daughter in her family, she credits her confidence to the love and support of her parents. She embraces her body and enjoys the attention she receives. Despite challenges, including being dropped from a lead role due to an actor’s preference, she remains resilient.

Her breakthrough role came in the series Borokini, followed by Last Straw, Liberty, and Ololade on Netflix. One of her proudest moments was receiving a personalized Netflix gift box, signifying international recognition.

 

(2) NAFISAT ABOLADE

Nafisat Abolade, an Osun State native, always had a passion for acting, despite her father’s wish for her to pursue law. Determined to follow her dreams, she studied Theatre and Dramatic Arts at Obafemi Awolowo University, a decision that set her on the path to success in the film industry. Her breakthrough role came in Ewa Ade, where she portrayed a character completely opposite to her real-life personality. Playing a rude, arrogant girl who constantly looked down on others, she proved her ability to step into different roles convincingly. This versatility has since become one of her strongest assets.

Nafisat acknowledges the challenges of standing out in a highly competitive industry, however, she remains committed to her dreams, consistently pushing boundaries to showcase her depth as an actress. She cites veteran actor Ibrahim Chatta, whom she refers to as the “King of Theatre,” as her biggest influence, alongside Toyin Abraham, whom she admires for their values, both in and outside the movie world.

One of her most challenging roles was Adeife, a character that required her to transition between a sweet, loving personality and a mentally unstable one. The constant emotional shifts in the role tested her skills but she loved the challenge.

Looking ahead, Nafisat is eager to explore even more dynamic characters. In 2025, she plans to take on a “tout role,” a departure from the roles she has played so far. She has multiple projects lined up, including MM, which she will be releasing before the end of the month. For upcoming actresses,  she advises them to be patient, as everyone’s time and season is different, they should stay patient, be unique, and avoid shortcuts.

 

(3) ARAMIDE ADESIYAN

Aramide Adesiyan is another rising star who is making her mark in the Yoruba movie industry. Originally from Ile-Ife, Osun State, she studied agriculture at Obafemi Awolowo University but chose to follow her passion for acting. Her journey in Nollywood began in 2018, and although it wasn’t easy at first, her perseverance and dedication helped her push through.

Her breakthrough came with the movie Shotayo, where she played a role while also serving as the producer which earned her recognition on social media and within the industry.

Aramide credits actresses Wunmi Toriola and Funke Akindele, as well as director Kunle Afolayan, as her biggest inspirations. She admires their work ethic and ability to create high-quality films.

While she is open to taking on various challenging roles, she has made it clear that she will never accept roles that require nudity, as she wants to maintain a respectable image for her family. One of her most challenging roles was in the cinema film Oriade Fadaka, where she had to work closely with seasoned industry veterans, making it a demanding but rewarding experience.

Omotola Odunsi, popularly known as Omotola The Actor, is also a protégé of Odunlade Adekola. Although she has played a tout before, she looks forward to exploring the character in greater depth.
