The Popo Aguda Carnival held on Easter Sunday, April 21, 2019, has proven to be one of the major tourist attractions in Lagos state. The Popo Aguda carnival, organized by the Brazilian descendants in Lagos is an annual carnival to reinvent the age-long heritage and value of the Popo clan to exhibit the cultural pastime and history of its people.
The Popo Aguda carnival is only held in Lagos. It is a unique initiation by the Brasilian Descendant movement; it has no parallel anywhere in Yoruba land. Lagos is divided into two parts namely the Lagos Island and the Lagos Mainland. The indigenes of Lagos mostly reside in Lagos Island , also known as Isale Eko. Acoording to the President of the Brasilian descendant in Lagos, Graciano Oladipupo Martins, The Popo Aguda carnival is used to showcase the culture of the Brasilian returnees. The carnival however serves as a reminder of they are and where they originate from.
The 2019 Popo Aguda tagged Going Back To Our Roots, was held at the ancient Igbosere area of Lagos where the descent majorly resides. The event was wholesomely attended by Lagos bigwigs, who also have ancestral affinity with the people of Brasil.
The ambience of the venue is cosy and gives the impression that the people and event are of the norm. The colour display of light bulbs were on point and the sitting structures seems different from the regular.
The songs are mostly of the Caribbean genre as ladies and gentlemen were seen hovering around in peculiar Brazilian attire.
Popular Highlife singer, Yinka Alakija Band Quest was constant on the bandstand to render sonorous Carribean number for the enjoyment of the guests and tourist who thronged in from all over the world t witness the event.
The Samba group also performed with energy and passion for their home country, Brasil, followed by the Rhythm Riddle Dance Troupe of LASU, who were able to communicate with the guest through a dance drama.
The event also witnessed major performance from veteran singer and hit makers, who are currently preserving the value and heritage of highlife and folklore as Jesse Buga, Jimi Solanke, Eko Brass Band, Gboyega Adelaja , Brazlian Samba Band (Meboi group) and lots of wonderful performance kept guests on their feet.
The guests also had the luxury of choice in the Brasilian delicacies that were served.
The event also witnessed the presence of bigwigs in the south west and tourist from Europe and North America, who came to have a nice time. The Vice Consular of Brasilian Embassy in Nigeria, Augus Bandera was also present at the event. Others include, Eldon Maria Perso, Franscesco Paso, Mirian Dons Santo, Carlo Martinez,Tunde Wilson, Lanre Taorey Coker, Steve Omojafor, Gbolahan Odeinde Prof. Abisogun Leigh, Otunba Olayinka Williams, Folake Marques Adenuga, Oganga Williams, Yinga Fregene, Adegboyega Ademiloye, Ex-Governor of Ogun State, Olusegun Osoba, Tunde Alabi, Prof. Tayo Ajayi and many more.
