It was amidst joy and happiness on Monday, 22nd April when celebrities gathered together to celebrate with Segun Awolowo, the grandchild of late Obafemi Awolowo as he gave out his daughter’s hand in marriage to her hubby, Akintoye Kayode. Together with his beautiful wife, Tola Awolowo, they hosted the crème de la crème to a show-stopping wedding in Lagos. It was one wedding which has been the talk of the town for many days. The party had in attendance many important personalities from all walks of life. One of the many side attractions at the party were some big boys who stormed the party in large numbers. They are close friends of Segun Awolowo. They have been together for over 3 decades. They stole the show at the party with their uniform customized Awolowo’s style of cap. It was a deliberate move done with Awolowo to keep late Obafemi Awolowo’s memories alive, remind us of his legacy and style of dressing. The cap was in colour purple and about 30 or more of his friends were given the cap which they rocked at the wedding. Most of them paired their cap with white outfits.
There were also some other set of guests who wore the cap just to pay their respect to the late sage. The customized cap was done by one of the waves making hat companies in Nigeria, Imperial hats. There was a loud ovation when they were all called out to take a bow and let people see them, even some who are die-hard fans of late Awolowo who are older friends also came out. It was a colourful session where everyone took turns to take photographs. These type of iconic caps can be seen on the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, who is an in-law to the Awolowos’. That has been his style for many years. One of Segun’s close friends who wore the cap was the chairman of the wedding and Segun’s close pals of many years, Lanre Tejuosho. He was up and doing at the party and he performed his responsibility well as the chairman.
The heir apparent to the Iru dynasty, Aremo Segun Oniru was also not missing at the party. The former Lagos Commissioner is one of the close pals of Segun Awolowo. He loves to party with his friend and the has many across the social and corporate sector. He was seen also sitting at the VIP section at the wedding.
What about Bimbo Ashiru? The Ogun state former Commissioner for Commerce and Industry was also up and about at the wedding. He was always seen beside Segun and many already know them to be very close friends. He practically made sure all of Segun’s guests were all taken care of at the party. The Chairman of Forte Oil, Femi Otedola cannot be missing in this list, he was also there to honour his friend, Segun Awolowo. All the way from Delta, the former Commissioner for information in Delta stormed Lagos all because of his friend. The likes of super big boys, Tunde Okanlawon, Tunji Taylor, Akeem Olanrewaju also dazzled at the party. One of the top shots in Virgin Atlantic, John Adebanjo was at the party with his wife, he is also a good friend of Segun Awolowo.
The Governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi shares a great bond with the Awolowo family as well, especially with Segun. Ayo Subair is also one of the in-laws of the Awolowos, he is married to one of the daughters of late sage Awolowo. He is also very close to Segun. FIRS boss, Tunde Fowler was also part of the train, he was sitting at the VIP area at the event with his pretty wife, Rosemary Fowler. He is also one of the close friends of Segun Awolowo. Big time real estate guru, Yemi Lawal did not miss the party, he was with his pretty wife, Ayo as well. When you mention lists like this, this trio can never be found missing, Sir Shina Peters, Tunde Ayeni and Tayo Ayeni. They are a set of friends who take Segun serious and that is why you will always see them at each other’s event. Sir Shina Peters made a special performance for his friend’s daughter at her wedding.
Tayo and Tunde Ayeni were also seen having a nice time together with their wives, Tutu and Biola. The former minister who has many portfolios in his kitty back in the days shares a close friendship with Segun too, it takes a good person to be able to keep friends for so many years, Demola is part of them. Banana Island big boy, Folusho Adeagbo was at the party as well. He is also one of the very close pals of Segun Awolowo. All the way from Abuja, big time socialite, Terry Waya stormed the event. The highly connected big boy who once ruled the social scene before he took a brief leave has staged a stunning comeback. His relevance within the political scene is still very huge. One of his close pals is Segun Awolowo whose base too is mostly in Abuja. The former governor of Cross River State, Donald Duke dazzled at the party with his wife, Onari. They were seen in the VIP section. He is one of the good friends of the bride’s father.
To say veteran publisher and boss of Ovation Magazine and TV is one of the protégés of late Awolowo is stating the obvious. He was at the event to support his friend of many years on his daughter’s wedding. The former Governor of Ogun State is like an elder brother to Segun Awolowo but he was also there to support him and his family. One of Segun’s good friends is the Ogun state governor-elect, Dapo Abiodun. He was more than happy as his friend’s daughter got married in style. He was seen almost on every VIP table and many wanted to catch a glimpse of him and his wife, Bamidele. Sir Pius Akinyelure is like a father to Segun Awolowo but he was at the party to pay allegiance to his late grandfather. Another grandfather at the party who wore the Awo Cap was former Ogun State governor, Aremo Olusegun Osoba. He was there to honour the Awolowos.
Foremost businessman, Abdulsamad Rabiu is also one of the close associates of Segun Awolowo. He is the founder of BUA Group, a Nigerian conglomerate active in cement production, sugar refining and real estate. Another of his close allies is Akinwumi “Akin” Adesina who is the President of the African Development Bank. He previously served as Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development. He was also sitting at the VIP section. Former Governor Amosun’s Chief of Staff, Tolu Odebiyi was there and also wore the cap.
