Lagos Reveals 50-day Activities To Celebrate Golden Jubilee Anniversary

50 days have been earmarked by the Lagos state government to put up a glamorous Lagos @ 50 anniversary.
Lagos @ 50 Planning Committee recently unveiled range of activities for the final celebration of the State’s Golden Jubilee anniversary.
Speaking at world press conference held inside the Banquet Hall in Lagos House, Alausa Ikeja, Co-chairman of the Lagos @ 50 Planning Committee, Mr Habeeb Fasinro posited that the final lap of the celebration would kick off on Saturday, April 8 and the grand finale will take place on Saturday, May 27, 2017.
Fasinro, who was later joined at the conference by other members of the Committee including Professor Ademola Abass, Hon. Adebimpe Akinsola, Mrs. Sarah Boulos, Mrs. Chika Balogun, said the events lined up for the celebration has been carefully selected to tell the story and journey from 1967 when the State was created till date. He said the event would kick off on April 8, with a special Musical Play tagged “Wakaa” produced and directed by ace producer and director, Bolanle Austen-Peters at the Muson Centre, Onikan Lagos.
He said the celebration would continue on April 13 with a three-day Broadway Musical Concert tagged “FELA” that would feature the life and times and the Afrobeat creator, Fela Anikulapo Kuti and celebrate his pioneering music to be performed by a combined cast of the original Broadway production and the Royal National Theatre production under Bill T. Jones. The Co-chair said a Boat Regatta parade would also hold on April 15 in Epe, Badagry and Lagos Island to showcase the State’s aquatic asset to residents and visitors alike, while a Jazz Meets Fashion event would take place on April 30 and would see Grammy award winning Jazz artistes share the stage with Nigerian musicians while the evolution of fashion in Lagos State over the past 50 years will also dominate the runway.
He added that Ibile comedy challenge will be staged on the 7th of May while the glamorous Lagos Carnival will be held on the 13th day of May.
Meanwhile, May 19th,21st 22nd have been set aside for Eyo festival ,kakadu musical show and special legislative celebration in that order. There will be a science and Art exhibition on the 23rd while 25th and 26th have been set aside for international conferences with the caption ‘’ Lagos from Mega city to Smart City.
The grand finale which coincide with the Children’s day May 27th will be used as an avenue to host and celebrate the chidren, whilst other last day activities would go on side by side.
However, Mr Habeeb quickly affixed that sporting activities have been added to the retinue of activities saying the principal’s cup will be adopted as part of the Lagos@ 50 celebrations. He noted that there are provisions to accommodate more events during the course of the celebration if the need arises.
A jumat servive to herald the end of the celebration will hold on Friday May 26th while a church thanksgiving service will take place on Sunday 28th of May.
