The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) says it has created an electronic certificate management system to help private candidates sitting for the end of the year West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) to request for their certificates.

According to The Nation, the exam body also introduced “Quick Response Code”, which makes “it impossible to falsify certificates issued by the council.”

Binta Abdulkadri, national committee chairman of the council in Nigeria, disclosed this on Thursday during its 57th annual meeting held in Abuja.

Speaking at the event, which also featured presentation of awards to outstanding candidates as well as schools, Binta said WAEC is leveraging on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to improve its service delivery.

“The Nigeria National Office, in particular, has taken advantage of Information and Communication Technology to improve its service delivery,” she said.

“This development has enabled the council in Nigeria to achieve total migration from paper-based to electronic enrolment of candidates for its examinations.

“The adoption of Advanced Printing Technology and deployment of a new technological solution, Item Differential Profile, are some of the innovations adopted by the council to tackle the menace of examination malpractice.

“The Council in Nigeria has also perfected it’s Electronic Certificate Management System, an online portal being deployed to enable qualified candidates in the WASSCE for private candidates to request for their certificates online via a dedicated platform.”

On his part, Olu Adenipekun, WAEC’s head of national office, said the new platform would take effect with candidates who sat for the WASSCE second series in August/September this year.

He, however, stated that details of the online platform would be made available to the public in due course.
