Anytime you mention gospel singer, Mike Abdul, the thought of his close friend, Monique will definitely come to mind. Why because they are very close. You will always see them together. It even became an issue a few years ago, when some people thought probably the 2 friends were dating. This was because many people don’t know much about the 2 gospel musicians.
Recently, Mike Abdul was at the 40th birthday of his friend, Monique and was engaged by the Head of City People TV, SUNDAY ADIGUN, where he revealed what many people don’t know about Monique and how they met in 2010.
Let me start by saying we are celebrating your pal today, how do you feel celebrating Monique at 40?
Amazing. We thank God, knowing that she is a person God has truly helped you just want to celebrate her. You want to look at what she has been through, the tough road and all of that and she is here today. We just have nothing other than to be grateful. So grateful to God who has helped her this far and I am particularly happy for her. Knowing a lot about her journey, it is beautiful, knowing how she started the music and how she put everything into it. She put everything… if she doesn’t see it, she is not moving. She is an amazing person, proud of her, happy for her.
What is really your relationship with Monique?
Hmmm! 2010 was the first time I met her. It was her husband that first called me and said we will like to have you on a song by Monique and I was like seriously ehn ehn oya and they sent me the song, I kind of liked it and I was like wow. Let’s do it and it happened to be Kabiyesi Oba Gbogbo Aye and I think in 2011, we released a song and, of course, by 2012, I got another call from the couple and they wanted me to manage the artiste and I was like wow! Great job and then we started. By 2012 we started as a record label Spaghetti Records and, of course, she was the first artiste signed to the label. By 2013, I needed to drop my own first work, guess what then, I dropped Mo Rire written by Monique, it was amazing. Dropped it on the record label Factanic in 2014. We dropped Power Flow by Monique, it was just a blessing for us, a big blessing. It was 3 years back to back blessings. It was beautiful for us and since then it has been like that, God has helped us. God has put us through a lot. It has been a beautiful working relationship with her, I am looking forward to more.
It got to a point where people were saying you both were dating?
Well, it was inevitable. When people get successful at their work, people would talk especially when it happens to be a man and woman. People would make up their minds about what they think is going on, so I didn’t think it was anything to bother about. Well, I don’t think it’s a big deal. When I was young I have seen artistes who worked together and people decided to believe that they were married or they were doing stuff or whatever. In Midnight Crew, you know we are 2 guys and 2 ladies, people decided that we were married. Many things went on. Stories were everywhere so it was something I have got used to, something that I know that people would say, I think you that you know it yourself, I think you should live your life, enjoy your life. Know yourself, know what you are doing and don’t be stupid, but for people who already have made up their mind about you, don’t bother, that is it.
Kabiyesi is still a hit what did you guys put in it?
It is still a hit till tomorrow, well honestly, we put work into it. We did whatever we were supposed to do, but honestly, we will say thanks to God, ultimately God because before we recorded God was involved. God gave us instructions and we followed the instructions then the result shows that we waka well. When it was time for Power Flow it was also amazing, when Power Flow happened we didn’t think Power Flow was a fantastic song because as a songwriter and professional it was too slow but you see it was amazing because Monique insisted that is the song she wanted to push. She said, this is the song I want to produce and we have to support her. We supported her and we were shocked. Immediately she dropped it within two months we got the feedback and it was huge, it was massive, till today Power Flow on the record label is the most streamed project by Monique, in fact, by anybody on the label.
Let us talk about your brand Mike Abdul?
Well, Mike Abdul, we have worked with Mike Abdul and we are still here. We have done Mo Rire, Korede and we are still working. I think by April, we are dropping another album from Mike Abdul it has been a Roller Coaster, it has been a beautiful one I must say.
What are we expecting?
Trust me, 10 tracks we try. In April, I think April 15th precisely we are going to be dropping another album by Mike Abdul “Halleluyah Always” that is the title. It features 14 artistes. We have Samuel Okposo, Ada, Shola Allyson, Godfrey’s amazing list I must say.
What do you wish for Monique today?
I wish her the very best, I wish that her story will make sense wherever she steps she possesses and that the Lord will keep guiding and protecting her in Jesus name. Thank you.
