Kemi was shaken, she cried and cried. After a while, she picked up her bag and went to her car, when she got in she just sat down crying.
How could I have been so careless?
What did I miss?
why did I not ask him?
It was a very terrible feeling for her. She couldn’t get out of bed, Dele must have called her at least 25 times before the day was over but she couldn’t just talk to him. She was already in love, she began to consider herself cursed, or what explanation can be given for what has happened? She was numb for days, for weeks. Dele did not make things easy for her, he did not stop calling, he did not stop texting, and he did not stop sending gifts. The only thing he did not do was go to her office, he knew she could embarrass him.
Dele did not give up, he kept trying to reach out to her. He eventually went to see Kemi’s best friend, Wura who lives in a neighbouring town. He was able to convince her that she had to come with him to plead with Kemi. Wura followed Dele to see Kemi. Wura kept telling Kemi to let go and should see Dele as a man who genuinely loves her that some other men would not try to make up. After a few days, Kemi made up with Dele. They got closer, and their love became stronger or so Kemi thought. They travelled together. Spent a lot of time outside town together. Dele this time around did not give her breathing space, he called her up at the slightest, took her out to lunch, he gave her a lot of attention. Kemi soon stopped feeling guilty about dating another woman’s husband. She constantly began to tell herself “After all, I am not planning to be his wife” “I don’t want to break his home, I only love him and he loves me too”.
she began looking for reasons why it was okay to date a married man, she would often tell herself that it was going to be difficult for her to meet a single man as a single mother. Dele called her one day and told her that he desperately needed five hundred thousand naira. She felt a little uneasy about the loan and told him she was low on cash. He spoke to her about it again a few days after. then one day when they were together, Kemi had stood up to use the toilet when her phone beeped, it was an email and it was a bank alert, Dele had checked it and saw that there was a deposit of two million naira into Kemi’s account. He also saw her bank balance and he was shocked, so she has all this money and refused to give him just five hundred thousand naira? When he heard her coming back, he dropped her phone and acted as if he did not see anything. Before he dropped the phone he had marked the message as “unread”.
Kemi noticed that her phone wasn’t the way he had placed it but then she did not say anything, there was no way Dele would touch my phone. She trusts him, what will he be looking for?
By the next morning, Dele had sent a very emotional message to Kemi asking for the money again. Kemi was so touched by the message that she requested his account details. Kemi sent the money and Dele was appreciative of her kindness.
Dele asked Kemi about her menstrual cycle one day while they were having a conversation.
“Babe, do you menstruate at all?” He asked
“What kind of question is that?” she replied
“We have been together for almost two years and you haven’t said anything about your monthly cycle, not once,” he said
She laughed hysterically and responded “Yet, I have children”
“Of course, I do” she added
From that moment Dele paid attention to her cycle, they had stopped using protection during sex for a while and Kemi had never been pregnant. About four months after they had the conversation, Kemi missed her period Dele had become more calculative with their lovemaking, he desperately wanted another child as his wife had only a child after eight years of marriage and hasn’t been able to get pregnant after their son’s delivery. Kemi however did not know that was Dele’s plan all along. She did not even pay attention to the fact that her period was delayed, she thought it was just a delay until she began to feel feverish and then she went to the hospital. Her Dr advised that she should run some tests part of which there was a pregnancy test. She went ahead to do the test. She left for work and came back in the evening for the result. When she got the test results, she broke down in tears, how can she be so careless, how could she? She asked the Dr if she could do an evacuation almost immediately. The Dr advised that she could come back the next morning.
Kemi barely slept, she got to the hospital as early as 8 am. She wanted it done and over with. When the procedure was over, she went to the office. she called Dele to come over later in the evening. Dele asked that they meet at their usual spot but she declined. When Dele came over she showed Dele the result. He was happy he lifted her, she was confused, she was expecting him to shout and get angry, but here he was happy. She told him to calm down and that she had gotten rid of the pregnancy.
“You did what?” he asked
“I got rid of it” she responded
“You killed my child?” he yelled and then he went on to say all sorts of hurtful things.
Kemi just stood there looking at him, confused not knowing what to say. After a while, he picked up his car keys and left. Kemi left for home too. She couldn’t do much, she went into her children’s room dn slept there. The kids were so happy to see her the next morning, she got them ready for school, something she enjoyed doing. She dropped them off at school and came back home, she just wanted to sleep, she hadn’t even checked her phone. when she got back home after school runs, she decided to check her phone. Dele had sent her messages calling her all sorts of names from a “murderer” to a “baby killer” to a “wicked woman” to a ‘selfish girl” to “Jezebel”
Kemi desperately wanted to see Dele and explain that she got rid of the baby because she did not want to do anything that will wreck his home. All attempts to see Dele wasn’t working, he stopped picking up her call and blocked her number. Kemi began to justify her actions, She did not think she did anything wrong. Since she couldn’t reach Dele, she decided to move on with her life. She however had no regrets about getting rid of the pregnancy.
