What Nordica Fibroid Care Centre Has Achieved In 2 Years

by Jamiu Abubakar

Few days ago, Nordica Fibroid Care Centre, a subsidiary of Nordica Fertility Centre clocks 2 Years of establishment. The centre which was launched for use on July 9, 2021 started by hitting the headline of major news bulletins in the country with the introduction of High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU), a new technological device which makes fibroid treatment easier and less painful.

Within 2 years that the centre was established, there has been lots of positive testimonies from patients. They were thankful to God with kudos to the centre for helping them treat their fibroid issues. The centre has no doubt put smiles on the faces of many women who are battling with fibroids and are almost getting tired of finding a lasting solution to their worries.

Ever since inception, the centre has continued to enjoy huge patronage from patients, many of whom came based on referral from every part of Nigeria and neighbouring countries. In less than one year, the centre recorded over 100 patients who were successfully treated with the high powered HIFU machine.

Right now, the number has risen geometrically as records showed that 328 patients have undergone treatment at the centre. What is more interesting is the testimonies they gave after their sweet encounter with the machine.

Nordica Fibroid Care Centre came at the right when all hope was almost lost. Then the fear of undergoing a painful surgery scared many of them away from treating fibroids. Dr. Abayomi Ajayi who is a renowned fertility expert and the MD of the Fibroid Care Centre understood this and invested hugely by partnering HAIFU Limited China, makers of the High Intensity Focused Ultrasound technology and the rest is history. The machine treats fibroids in patients without going through surgery which used to be the way out. This was new and unprecedented in the entire country and in West Africa. As at the period it was launched and brought in, there were just three of these machines in Africa, one is in Egypt, another in South Africa and the third just arrived in Nigeria courtesy Nordica Fibroid Centre.

Ever since commencement of operation 2 years ago, Nordica Fibroid Centre has put smiles on faces of fibroid patients who have consulted the centre. What amuses them most is the machine requires minimal human contact with the patient. The rate at which they recovered getting back on their feet and living their normal life barely 24 hours after they had the surgery is also overwhelming. It is one of the landmark achievements this present generation should be proud of.

Dr. Abayomi in a chat with Citypeople revealed how the machine works he explained that one of the advantages of the technology is minimal human contact with the patient. “the woman just essentially lies on the table and after about one hour and thirty minutes to two hours, the process is all over. And the funny part is that you see most of them asking if you have started after the process because you don’t touch them. It is the water from the machine that touches their abdomen and that’s it.

“Patients should expect to have an assessment whereby we know whether you are an ideal patient for HIFU, this also will include a screening for cervical cancer, a check on the cervix and once we are sure that the patient is qualified, she does MRI to help us localize the fibroid so that the machine can be appropriately set to know where to fire. Once that is done, we have to prepare the bowel of the patient because HIFU doesn’t like gas. The patient will also have to train or learn how to lie down still for about two hours because that is the average length of the process. It could be shorter or slightly longer. On the day of the surgery, the patient is expected to come to the hospital with someone to accompany her. It will be done under sedation so she has to come fasting. The treatment can be stopped in-between to allow the patient some time to rest. It really is like doing an ultrasound but the difference is that this is longer so you are going to be lying down for quite a while”, he concluded.

As a way of promoting the knowledge of the new HIFU technology and house medical officers can use it, Nordica Fibroid Centre within the period of 2 years has succeeded in series of free treatments, free training for doctors, collaboration to give free treatment, Doctors webinars, Nurses webinars and soon. With this, the fear of treating fibroids in women would soon become a thing of the past.
