Chief Waidi Ekun and table tennis: celebrating a national icon

by Reporter

Fifty years ago, precisely on August 27, 1973, a young and talented athlete in the game of table tennis rose to prominence when he became Nigeria’s national champion of the ping pong game. Waidi Ekun had played his way into stardom and international recognition, thereby paving the way for generations of Nigerian and African table tennis players.

More recently, Chief Waidi Ekun was celebrated by His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari, the former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces for his championship victory fifty years ago.

In recognition and further celebration of this sporting legend who has continued to inspire other athletes in Ibadan, Oyo State and Nigeria, the Chief Waidi Ekun Committee of Friends has considered it necessary to plan and execute a programme of events to mark the golden jubilee of his memorable achievement as a national champion.

We are resolved to put together all ideas and resources geared towards the celebration of this international sports star.

All events arranged in honour of Chief Waidi Ekun will culminate in a finale, with an exhibition table tennis game, on the 50th anniversary of his championship victory on
August 27th, 2023.

Expected at the special event are royalties, captains of industries, sports veterans, sportsmen and women, as well as the media, and other organisations. To this end, a detailed line of activities will soon be released.
