The alarming rise of drug abuse among Nigerian youths

by Jessica Ofuoma

Drugs have become a major problem among Nigerian youths, causing worry for society, families, and the future. Young individuals are attracted to substances like cannabis cakes, nitrous oxide balloons, alcohol-infused gummies, and shisha, seeking temporary happiness and an escape from reality. The lack of responsible guidance from influencers is alarming, and the government needs to take action to deal with this escalating crisis.

The Quest for Temporary Happiness:

The prevalence of drug abuse among Nigerian youths stems from their desire for immediate gratification and momentary happiness. The allure of substances like cannabis, nitrous oxide, alcohol, and shisha lies in the short-lived euphoria they bring. These substances offer an escape from the challenges of daily life and allow youths to experience a temporary state of bliss. However, the consequences of these choices can be far-reaching, affecting their physical health, mental well-being, and overall future.

The Dangers of Misguided Influences:

In an age heavily influenced by social media, celebrities, and influencers, the role models that young people look up to can significantly impact their decisions. Unfortunately, some influencers misuse their platforms to promote drug abuse, sending a dangerous message to impressionable minds. The glorification of substance use on social media creates a false sense of normalcy and acceptance, encouraging more youths to experiment with these harmful substances.

The Forgotten Identity:

Another disturbing aspect of drug abuse among Nigerian youths is the temporary escape from reality it offers. The pressures of academic, societal, and familial expectations often lead young individuals to seek solace in these substances, temporarily forgetting their struggles and hardships. However, this escape is merely an illusion that blinds them to the potential consequences of their actions, hindering personal growth and development.

Government Intervention:

The government has a pivotal role to play in curbing the rising tide of drug abuse among Nigerian youths. This begins with comprehensive education programs that communicate the risks and dangers of substance abuse in clear and simple language. These programs should target high school students and university undergraduates alike, using relatable examples to ensure the message resonates.

Furthermore, law enforcement agencies must crack down on the illegal production, distribution, and sale of these substances. Strict penalties for offenders, combined with effective monitoring and enforcement, can discourage both suppliers and consumers. Rehabilitation centers should be established across the nation, providing a safe haven for individuals struggling with addiction to seek help, guidance, and support.
The growing trend of drug abuse among Nigerian youths is a pressing concern that requires immediate attention from all stakeholders. The allure of temporary happiness, misguided influences, and the quest to forget one’s identity have contributed to this alarming issue. The government must take proactive measures to address the problem through education, law enforcement, and rehabilitation initiatives. Only by working together can we hope to steer the younger generation away from the dangers of substance abuse and pave the way for a healthier, brighter future for Nigeria.
