Owambe is a Yoruba term meaning “it’s happening” or “that is where the merriment is happening” Owambe parties are vibrant, lively celebrations, deeply rooted in Nigerian culture, particularly among the Yoruba people.

The owambe parties is more rooted in the South-West but Owambe has spread to other parts of Nigeria. The Igbo now hold Owambe. Even the North have joined. And most times when there’s a party, they choose Aso Ebi. Aso Ebi is a Yoruba term meaning “family cloth” or “uniform cloth.” It’s a traditional Nigerian practice where friends, family, and acquaintances wear matching or coordinating outfits to special events, particularly parties.
Owambe’s used to be done mostly on Saturdays whether birthdays, weddings, or any celebration, apart from naming, which is done 8-days after birthing, and amongst the Muslims Sundays for nikkah (weddings), but now it is celebrated on any day of the week, from Mondays to Sundays.
Despite the economic hardships faced by many Nigerians, they are still hooked on extravagant events for a variety of reasons.
Even with how the prices of things have doubled and tripled, people still set aside money for faaji (celebration). Parties still more celebrated elaborately and more extravagantly.
