Head Of School, Rev. Sis CHRISTIANA OLAGUNJU
Can you introduce yourself?
I am Reverend Sister Christiana Olagunju, SHCJ, the Administrator of Holy Child College, a prestigious institution that will celebrate its 80th anniversary on April 9, 2025, by God’s grace. Today, we are hosting a Funfair—a yearly event where parents, students, and staff come together to interact, celebrate, and enjoy a love feast. This year’s Funfair also marks the beginning of our 80th-anniversary celebrations, with many activities and delicious food provided by various vendors.
How does the school admit students? What criteria must applicants meet?
Holy Child College is one of 10 Catholic secondary schools within the Archdiocese of Lagos. Admission begins with purchasing a form, which costs N10,000. Prospective students then sit for an entrance examination, typically held in February or March, before Easter. The pass mark is 60 out of 100. Successful candidates are invited for an interview, and those who pass are admitted into the school.
What is the class size at Holy Child College?
We maintain a maximum of 30 students per class, though currently, each class has about 20–25 students.
Why limit class sizes to 20–25 students?
Smaller class sizes enable teachers to provide personalized attention and address the unique needs of each student. At Holy Child, we prioritize the holistic education of girls, ensuring they excel academically and develop their talents in areas such as drama, sports, or dance. This approach equips students with skills they can rely on even if higher education is not immediately accessible. We cater to both affluent and less-privileged students, ensuring every child has opportunities to thrive.
There was an exam being written on campus. Can you explain its purpose?
The exam is called SAT, which stands for Scholastic Aptitude Tests. This is an international exam required for admission to universities abroad, especially in the U.S. Holy Child College serves as a center for SAT. Starting next year, we plan to offer additional exams, such as the ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) and the Cambridge exams, as the school will be registered for these by January 2025.
As an all-girls school, do you employ male teachers?
Yes, we employ male teachers, but they are expected to strictly adhere to established boundaries. They are not permitted to physically discipline or insult students. Any serious issues are escalated, and violations of these rules result in termination, as the students’ welfare is our utmost priority.
Why doesn’t Holy Child College have a signpost?
The school’s reputation speaks for itself. Holy Child College doesn’t rely on advertising or signage like many private schools because it is a missionary institution. People already know its location behind St. Gregory’s Boys College, and the school focuses on providing quality education over commercial promotion.
