He is popularly referred to as DJ Drex, but his real name is Chidozie Onyema. DJ Drex is an indigene of Imo State and has been in the business for a decade.
He opened up to City People Reporters ADEOLA FAGBIYE AND JESSICA AHMODU in an interview during the City People Music Awards last week on how he became a DJ, his love for music and why he is referred to as “Oba DJ” in Egbeda.
How did you go into Djing?
It all started with my love for music and when I met DJ Snoop in 2003 in Egbada. I loved the way he played and did things most especially his personality. After the show. I approached him, but he was a bit reluctant to help. He didn’t really pay attention to what I said, but I wasn’t discouraged. I spoke with my mum about my dream and she supported me, thereafter, I gained admission into secondary school.
When did you start DJing?
Hmm! I started attending shows, meeting with artistes and many DJs in 2003. In that same year, I met with DJ Trex at Ikeja and I told him about my plans and dreams, so he supported me, but If I’m asked when I started professionally, I would say 2007. I became a professional DJ in 2007.
What made you go into the business?
I went into the business because of my love for music and my passion for DJing and this is all I do for a living and trust me, God has been faithful. It’s not been easy, but I thank God.
DJing is a competitive business, how has it been for you?
First of all, I don’t believe in competition, I don’t have time for all that. Everyone is busy doing his/her thing, I don’t have time I’m a lover of the art and I do my thing and that’s why they call me Oba DJ The King of DJ, in Egbeda.
Any advice for upcoming DJs?
I really don’t like to say that someone is upcoming because people are doing their things on their lanes. But I’ll really like to say that if you have an opportunity to learn something, you should never misuse it.
