How Carter Efe Became A Streaming Star

by Daniji Emmanuel
  • How a Young Man Who Sold His Prize to Survive in Lagos Became One of Africa’s Biggest Online Entertainers

There was a time when Carter Efe needed money so badly that he sold a PlayStation 5 he had just won in a competition. The gaming console was worth considerably more than what he eventually sold it for, but survival came first. He needed money to take care of himself in Lagos, a city where dreams are expensive and talent alone does not pay the bills.

Years later, that same young man would sit in front of a camera with Afrobeats superstar Davido, attracting tens of thousands of people watching live and millions more following the conversation online. In December 2025, their livestream helped propel Carter Efe to the top of Africa’s Twitch streaming scene, with his follower count crossing 400,000. It was a remarkable journey for someone who began by making funny videos on social media. But Carter Efe’s rise did not happen overnight. It took years of creating content, taking risks, making people laugh and building a personality that could command attention in a crowded entertainment industry.

Today, his story is one of the clearest examples of how the internet is creating new opportunities for young Nigerian entertainers. You no longer have to wait for a record label, television station or movie producer to give you a chance. Sometimes, all you need is a phone, an internet connection and something that makes people stop scrolling. And Carter Efe has always known how to make people stop scrolling.

The Young Man Behind the Laughter

Born Oderhohwo Joseph Efe, Carter Efe hails from Ughelli North in Delta State, although he was born in Ogun State. He grew up in a family of seven children and is the sixth child. His early life was not without challenges. His father, who worked as a police officer, died in 2015. The loss brought financial difficulties for the family, affecting Efe’s educational plans. Although he passed his post-UTME examination, the family could not afford the expenses required for him to continue to university. His mother, a businesswoman, had to shoulder the responsibility of supporting the family.

For a young man with ambitions, this was a difficult situation. But Efe had something that would eventually become his greatest asset: a natural ability to make people laugh.

In 2019, after completing his secondary school education, he began creating comedy content and posting funny videos online. He admired fellow skit maker Sydney Talker, whom he has identified as one of his inspirations.

At the time, social media comedy was becoming increasingly competitive in Nigeria. Young creators were using Instagram, Facebook and other platforms to build audiences, while established entertainers were already enjoying millions of views.

Efe had to find his own space in that crowded environment. His answer was to embrace his unusual side.

He was loud, expressive, unpredictable and unafraid of looking ridiculous in front of the camera. While some entertainers carefully constructed polished characters, Carter Efe often leaned into exaggerated reactions, strange behaviour and unrestrained comedy.

It was a style that could divide opinions, but it was difficult to ignore. And in the attention economy, being noticed is often the first step towards being remembered.

The PlayStation 5 That Changed His Journey

One of the most revealing chapters of Carter Efe’s story came in 2021. He participated in a dance challenge organised by comedian Broda Shaggi to promote a song. Efe emerged as the winner and received a PlayStation 5 as his prize. For many young people, winning such an expensive gaming console would have been a reason to celebrate, show it off online or keep it as a prized possession. Efe had other problems to solve. After travelling to Lagos to collect the prize, he sold the console for about ₦250,000, even though he said it was worth roughly ₦750,000 to ₦1 million at the time.

Why would anyone sell such a valuable prize for so much less?

His explanation was simple: he needed the money to take care of himself in Lagos. That decision tells us something important about the journey behind the fame. Before the celebrity appearances, the viral moments and the streaming records, there was a young man trying to find his feet in one of Nigeria’s most demanding cities. Lagos offered opportunities, but it also came with the everyday pressures of accommodation, feeding, transportation and survival. Efe was willing to sacrifice a prize he had worked to win because he needed to keep moving. The competition also gave him an opportunity to come to Lagos and connect with the entertainment environment he wanted to be part of. It was not an instant ticket to stardom, but it became one of the stepping stones in his career.

How Carter Efe Built His Name

Carter Efe’s comedy was never just about telling jokes. His strength was his ability to turn his personality into the main attraction. His facial expressions, dramatic reactions, costumes and deliberately exaggerated behaviour helped distinguish him from other creators. He understood that online audiences often respond to characters they can instantly recognise. His content also fitted the way people consume entertainment on social media. A funny moment could be clipped, shared on WhatsApp, reposted on Instagram and discussed on X, introducing him to people who might never have visited his original page. That kind of circulation helped him grow beyond a small group of followers. By 2023, he had become an established name in Nigeria’s skit-making industry. In an interview that year, he spoke about his unusual style and explained how his participation in Broda Shaggi’s challenge had helped open doors for him.

But the next stage of his career would demonstrate that he was not interested in remaining only a comedy creator. He wanted to explore music, too.

Machala’ Took Him Beyond Comedy

In 2022, Carter Efe released *Machala*, a song inspired by his admiration for Wizkid. The track featured Berri Tiga and became a major talking point in Nigerian pop culture. The song’s title was already familiar to Wizkid fans, who frequently used the nickname to celebrate the singer. Efe turned that popular expression into a record that connected his comedy identity with the country’s music culture. Machala became a commercial breakthrough, topping the Apple Music Nigeria chart and drawing considerable attention to both performers. For Carter Efe, the success was significant because it showed that audiences could respond to him beyond comedy sketches. He could make people laugh, but he could also create a musical moment that people wanted to stream, discuss and share. The song also illustrated the power of internet culture in shaping Nigerian music. A personality who had built his following through funny videos was now part of conversations about hit records and the Afrobeats industry.

It would be wrong to suggest that every skit maker could easily make that transition. But Efe had found a way to use his existing audience to introduce another side of his creativity.

More importantly, *Machala* strengthened his visibility and helped bring him into conversations involving major music stars and their fan communities.

That connection between comedy, music and celebrity culture would later become especially valuable in his streaming career.

The Move Into Livestreaming

For years, Nigerian entertainers had used Instagram Live, TikTok and YouTube to interact with fans. However, the growing popularity of Twitch introduced a different kind of opportunity.

Twitch allows creators to broadcast for extended periods while viewers interact with them through live chats. The experience is less like watching a short comedy video and more like spending time with an entertainer in real time.

For creators, this can open several avenues for building a community, hosting guests, playing games, discussing trending issues and receiving financial support through subscriptions and other platform features.

For Carter Efe, the format suited the personality he had spent years building.

His humour was expressive and spontaneous. He could react to a situation, engage with another personality and turn an ordinary conversation into a moment people wanted to share.

Rather than abandoning the audience he had developed through skits, he could bring that audience into a longer entertainment experience.

Livestreaming also changed the relationship between the entertainer and the audience. Instead of waiting for a carefully edited video to appear, viewers could participate as events unfolded.

A celebrity could make a surprise appearance. A joke could become a trending topic. An unexpected phone call could turn into the biggest moment of the night.

And when those moments happened, social media ensured that the conversation continued long after the livestream ended.

Carter Efe was entering a space where his biggest strength was not necessarily the production of a perfect video. It was his ability to make something happen in front of a live audience.

The Night Davido Joined Carter Efe

December 17, 2025, became a defining date in Carter Efe’s streaming journey. The Nigerian entertainer hosted Davido on his Twitch channel for a livestream that attracted enormous attention. The session drew more than 80,000 concurrent viewers, with reports putting the peak at approximately 83,000 to 91,000, depending on the source and measurement.

The broadcast became one of the biggest livestreaming moments recorded by an African creator on Twitch at the time. It was not simply a case of a famous musician appearing on a smaller entertainer’s platform. It was a demonstration of how celebrity culture and livestreaming could work together to create a major digital event.

Davido brought his enormous fan base, while Carter Efe brought the platform, the energy and the audience that had followed his journey from comedy into streaming.

During the session, the pair spoke and interacted with viewers, creating moments that quickly spread across social media. Davido also made calls to influential personalities, adding to the excitement surrounding the broadcast.

The singer publicly supported Carter Efe’s ambitions, including calling for a major Twitch deal for the streamer. He also helped secure a Martell brand ambassadorship for him during the livestream, according to reports.

The numbers were extraordinary. Carter Efe’s Twitch following surged past 400,000, making him Africa’s most-followed streamer on the platform at that point. Reports also recorded a sharp rise in subscriptions during the broadcast.

For Carter Efe, it was a major career milestone. For the Nigerian entertainment industry, it was another sign that livestreaming could become a serious platform for reaching audiences and creating commercial opportunities.

The event also revealed something about the future of celebrity appearances. A musician no longer has to wait for a television interview or a formal media event to connect with fans. A livestream hosted by a digital creator can become a major entertainment destination in its own right.

Why Carter Efe Matters to Nigeria’s Streaming Industry

Carter Efe’s importance goes beyond his follower count. He represents a generation of entertainers who have built their careers outside the traditional structures of the entertainment industry. Their audiences are not limited by television schedules, radio playlists or the approval of conventional gatekeepers.

They can build a following online, experiment with different formats and take their audiences from one platform to another.

Carter Efe started with skits, expanded into music and then embraced livestreaming. Each stage gave his audience another reason to pay attention to him.

His story also shows the value of personality in the digital economy. People may initially click on a stream because a famous guest is appearing, but the host must still create an experience that keeps the audience engaged.

The Davido livestream benefited from the singer’s star power, but it also placed Carter Efe at the centre of a major moment. His channel became the meeting point for music fans, comedy lovers and curious viewers following the record-breaking broadcast.

That kind of visibility can create opportunities for sponsorships, partnerships and new audiences.

It also gives Nigerian creators a reason to look beyond short-form content. There is a growing market for long-form digital entertainment in which viewers spend time with personalities rather than simply consuming isolated clips.

However, there is a difference between going viral and building a lasting business. A record-breaking night can bring followers, but maintaining an audience requires consistency, planning, engaging content and an understanding of how platforms operate.

The real test for any streamer is what happens after the celebrity guest leaves and the headlines fade.

The Challenges Behind the Fame

Carter Efe’s rise has not been without controversy or uncertainty. Livestreaming places entertainers in front of audiences for extended periods, often with less opportunity to edit or reconsider what they say. That can make the content exciting, but it can also expose creators to disputes, criticism and platform moderation.

His Twitch account experienced a reported suspension in December 2025, shortly after the attention surrounding the Davido livestream. The episode highlighted the risks of depending heavily on a platform whose rules and enforcement decisions can affect a creator’s access to an audience. There is also the challenge of converting large audiences into sustainable income. Followers and views are valuable, but they do not automatically translate into consistent revenue. Creators must understand subscriptions, sponsorships, brand relationships and the economics of their platforms. They must also find ways to keep viewers interested when the excitement of a major guest appearance is no longer available.

For Nigerian streamers, there is an additional consideration: much of the global streaming business operates through platforms and payment systems designed for an international market. Local creators have to navigate those systems while building audiences at home and abroad. Carter Efe’s journey therefore tells two stories. One is about the possibilities of internet fame. The other is about the work required to turn that fame into a sustainable career.

From Survival to Stardom

There is something remarkable about the contrast between Carter Efe’s early struggles and his current place in the entertainment conversation. The young man who sold his PlayStation 5 because he needed money to survive in Lagos eventually found himself hosting one of the continent’s most talked-about livestreams. His journey was not a straight line. Comedy gave him visibility. Music widened his reach. Livestreaming offered him a new stage. At every turn, he found a way to use the attention he had built to explore another opportunity.

His story is also a reminder that the next big name in entertainment may not emerge through the familiar route of record deals, television appearances or movie roles. Some may rise through comedy sketches, online communities and livestreams watched by people across the world.

Carter Efe has already shown how far that route can take a young Nigerian entertainer. The next chapter will depend on how he sustains his audience, develops his content and turns his record-breaking moments into lasting success. But one thing is clear: the man who once needed to sell a prize to keep himself going has become a major figure in a digital entertainment space that is still finding its feet in Africa. And his journey is far from over.
