Wednesday, 3rd April, 2019, was the annual “Culture Day”of Sonbeam Preparatory School, Bodija Housing Estate Extension (otherwise called ‘New Bodija’), Ibadan,Oyo State of Nigeria.
The school honours me annually as Father of the Day/Guest Speaker at its Culture Day.
In my speech at the Wednesday event, I, again, appealed to parents and guardians to teach their children/wards our time-honoured tradition and culture from infancy.
I explained that tradition and culture are ways of life of a people, as ordained by God. And that, like an umbrella ,tradition and culture embrace the mother-tongue, names, dresses, foods, music, beliefs etc.
I commended people who embrace and promote their tradition and culture, as they also respect other peoples tradition and culture.
In addition, I appealed to parents/guardians not to force religion, career and marriage on their children/wards. But, rather counsel them and allow them to chart their destinies.
The regular Mother of the Day at the school’s Culture Day is Emeritus Professor Bolanle Awe,a world-renowned historian and educationist.
All my children attended Sonbeam Preparatory School, Ibadan, in the 1980’s/1990’s.
