Nigeria is a fertile land for Baby Lotions. This is because the population keeps increasing on a daily basis. Meanwhile, baby lotions are essential products for infants, and all aspiring mums need to buy baby moisturisers to help improve their baby’s skin texture. During pregnancy, an expectant mother must have looked forward with ecstasy to the day she would carry her baby in her arms but most importantly, keeping the baby healthy and beautiful is her first priority; hence, a need for moisturisers.
There is nothing as perfect as your baby’s skin. You cannot help but touch and caress it. Protecting your child’s skin from harmful chemicals is an important job for every Nigerian parent. To keep a baby’s skin healthy, mothers need to maintain its natural smoothness. Even if the skin doesn’t peel, they still need to apply baby moisturizers to retain its softness.
A first time mother has many crucial decisions to make, and one of them is zeroing on the right baby lotion to moisturiseyour baby’s skin.
According to 5 different mothers in Lagos who pleaded anonymity, they all noted that”baby’s do not really need a baby lotion, or other toiletries, for the first two months.”However 2 amongst these mothers who spoke at different times and in different locations are both winter baby mamas, said winter babies with extremely dry skin and oil would often leave the babies’ skin feeling greasy, so they started looking out for a good brand of baby lotion.”
Their criteria for baby lotions are: 1. Should be hydrating (water based). 2. Should be paraben-free. 3. Should be fragrance-free
- Should blend in without making the skin greasy — aim for softness, not oilness.
Based on these criteria, City People’s Brands & Products made further enquiries and found out that stiff competition exists between Cussons, Johnson’s, Pears and Little Angel Baby Lotions, which are the topmost brands in the Nigerian baby lotion market at the moment as both existing and new mothers pitch tent with these three major players on the market.
CUSSONS BABY LOTION
This brand is owned by PZCussons and founded in 1879 by Thomas Cussons. It has a mild and soothing effect on the baby’s skin which is clinically tested and proven. It contains mineral oil, olive oil and stearic acid that help to hydrate the skin and prevents irritation.
We think the best time to use this baby lotion is immediately after bathing and when your child is still wet. According to reviews from most mums, an excessive use of this baby lotion may cause your baby’s skin to peel off. It may also cause rashes around the neck for some children. Aside these, the overall quality are good and suit your baby’s tender skin. Cussons is sold forN1,000 on Konga and N1,250 Jumia.
JOHNSON’S BABY LOTION
Johnson’s baby lotion is an American brand of baby lotion owned by Johnson & Johnson and introduced in 1893. It provides moisturizers that help to maintain your child’s natural moisture for 24 hours. It has a unique fragrance that lasts long on your baby’s skin.
However, Johnson’s baby moisturizers contains formaldehyde- a type of preservative that may cause rashes on a child’s skin with sensitive skin. Most Nigerian mums complained about its excessive fragrance. City People Brands & Products find this baby lotion to be very cheap and of good quality though, it costs N1,857 on Jumia and N2,400Gloo.Ng. It is available in major Nigerian online stores and supermarkets near you.
PEARS BABY LOTION
Pears baby lotion is owned by Unilever Plc and developed by Andrew Pears in 1807 in England. It is made up of ingredients such as sodium hydroxide, hydrolyzed milk protein and olive oil that soothe the skin of both babies and adults. If your child’s skin reacts quickly to any of the lotions listed above, then you should consider Pears baby lotion. It is best for sensitive skin.
However, some mothers mums have complained that it darkens their baby’s skin. But we think it just maintains the skin colour and nourishes it as well.
LITTLE ANGEL BABY LOTION
Little Angel Baby Lotion leaves your baby’s skin soft and smooth. It is hypo-allergic and paraben free. It has been tested dermatologically, and pediatrician approved.
In Nigeria, most families find these baby moisturizers useful not only to kids but also to the entire family. To get best results, we advise you should apply it to your baby’s skin during bedtime. Many Nigerian mums love this lotion because it is safe for all skin types and it does not cause skin problems for their baby. Again, we found out that this lotion is not a popular brand in the market despite its unique qualities. But it has ingredients such as stearic acid, mineral oil;sorbitan stearate and cetyl alcohol which your baby needs to have a glowing skin. It costs N1,850on Konga and N1,650 on Jumia.
WHY THEY ARE MOTHERS’ CHOICE
Several nursing mothers that spoke with City People’s Brands & Products across Lagos and beyond voiced out their opinions over the internet and a large chunk of the respondents revealed that amongst several baby lotions product in Nigeria that Cussons Johnson’s, Pears and Little Angels baby lotions are their choices because these products are hydrating, paraben free, fragrance free and blend without making the body greasy.
OPPORTUNITY FOR NIGERIAN INVESTORS
With the highest birth rate on civilized earth, Africa now has the fastest growing population in the world! The continent’s population (nearly one billion at the moment) is predicted to rise to 2.3 billion in less than 40 years.Sadly enough, all top baby lotions manufacturers in Nigeria are not indigenous companies.
By 2050, several African countries including Uganda, Chad, Mali, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Niger, Burundi, and Malawi are projected to triple in size. In the same period, Nigeria (currently Africa’s most populous country) will have become the world’s fourth-biggest country.
All of these statistics point to one fact – at the current birth rates, more than one billion new babies will be born in Africa over the coming years.
