Watching Egbon Segun Akinlolu known as Beautiful Nubia yesterday at his playing base in Adekunle Fajuyi, Lagos one could see a self-made man who exudes beauty inside out. *
It wasn’t surprising to see the large turnout at his show yesterday. He has built a large fan base for himself across the country over the years with an unusual spirit of persistence, perseverance and passion which are some of life’s antidote that his music preaches.
To say some of his songs didn’t have a great impact on my growing years would be an understatement. It is very hard for me to forget one of his albums that have the song Owuro Lojo. I was a young undergraduate when he released that song. Anyone conversant with his music would attest to the fact that they bring certain peace and calmness to one’s soul. The deep message the song Owuro Lojo carries not only brightens one’s day but it is a song that is very instructive, educative, reflective and reassures one of a bright tomorrow. These and many more are the lustre today’s music lacks. Little wonder a British-born musician Rick Sanders wrote that if Beautiful Nubia’s songs don’t melt your heart Seek Help.
Some people often wonder why this man decided to do music rather than be in the*academics as a Professor, MD of a bank or top Government official* like his contemporaries and considering his Wisdom, Brilliance and Business Acumen as clearly exhibited in his music strategy. One can only give an answer by saying Beautiful Nubia is a SAN in his own world. Music lives inside of him.
Having followed his brand of music and nature for several years I like to say he has his own ideals and philosophy. He has a mind that can’t be easily influenced or corrupted. He is not a run-of-the-mill artist who chases clout or fame. His ideals and brand of music doesn’t make him lobby for corporate shows or government events. He has created his own Niche and driven it with self-respect and reliance. His music aside from being for public sensitization and mobilization preaches love, friendship, solidarity, respect for human dignity and right communal relationship.
When veteran journalist Benson Idonije described Beautiful Nubia in the 2008 edition of the Guardian he said Beautiful Nubia and his Roots Renaissance Band have helped to strengthen our belief that there is hope for genuine modern Nigerian and African music- Idonije
If I add further to Idonije’s observation I will say Beautiful Nubia is that artiste who has displayed severally True African Identities and Spirits. He has remained at home to identify with his root and using his music as a tool to inculcate moral values, love, happiness and selflessness among his people, particularly the youths whom he tirelessly encourages never to give up. His Eniobanke Festival created several years ago has over the years become a platform for upcoming musical Stars. Nubia has lived a life a contentment and passion which has been his driving force.
Today he has over 39 albums and 490 tracks.
