Call it one of the most popular age-grade groups in Ijebuland and you won’t be wrong. Call it one of the most visible of all the age-grade groups and you will be right.
This is because Egbe Bobakeye (Okunrin) Akile Ijebu is an age-grade group that has been transformed into a formidable institution that is well run by its members like a social club with its own constitution, Aims and Objective and Structure. Lets quickly tell you more about Egbe Bobakeye Akile Ijebu (Okunrin).
It is one of the over 20 age groups that exist in Ijebuland called Regberegbes. It is a traditional Ijebu age-grade group of male children born between 1st January 1956 to 31st December 1958. Whats are its Aims & Objectives? It is geared towards the sustenance of Ijebu Customs and Traditions. Two, the promotion of Social and Economic developments of members. Three, to promote the Unity amongst members and assist in times of need. Four, to cooperate with other Regberegbe of similar objectives in promoting and propagating Ijebu cultural values and the enhancement of the Ijebu fatherland. Five is to engage in all such activity that will enhance the realisation of all these objectives. 6, membership is open to anybody irrespective of religious profession or town of origin within Ijebuland. So whether you are Remo or Ijebu you can be a member if you so wish. Right now there are 168 members most of whom are well to do professionals. So successful are its members that they include 4 traditional rulers, 3 University Professors, a former Governor, lots of medical doctors, lawyers, engineers, top businessman, a retired colonel. The group started in 1995 with about 40 members. But it was incorporated in 1996. It started off with members, many of whom were classmates in the same school in Ijebu or in surrounding schools and with time it began to expand. The group after its formation had to wait for about 6 to 9 months before we decided to go for incorporation”, explained its Giwa, Otunba Biodun Onanuga.
The grand patron of the group is Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland. The Patron is Lagos Lawyers, Chief Chris Olufunmilola Okunowo. The Patroness is Chief (Mrs.) Yemisi Oshundeko.
