Mohammed Fawehinmi, the son of Nigeria’s social crusader and senior Advocate, Late comrade Gani Fawehinmi, has expressed concerns over the state of Lagos environment that is currently in squalor and environmental crisis caused by ineffective waste management program.
In a brief made available to City People, Mohammed hints about the high population density and congestion of Lagos, the commercial capital of Nigeria, which is already a risk of any form of outbreak. He implored to State government to as a matter of urgency, address the ineffectual sanitation system to save Lagosians fromhealth hazards.
He wrote:
What kind of Government is Ambode running in Lagos State. Does he want to kill everybody in Lagos because he is not coming back as Governor?
How many young children, babies, women and Lagosians generally have to die or be infected by killer diseases, before he starts clearing the unbearable piling of refuse.
What is the essence of the (VISIONSCAPE PROJECT) which he put down now?
Yesterday he was making speeches in a town hall meeting thanking the security heads for making Lagos safe, Meanwhile the refuse all over Lagos State has gone beyond constituting a mere nuisance. Rather, it is a health hazard.
What are all the members of Lagos State House of Assembly doing? What are all the Local Government Chairmen and Councilors doing? I hope that the Lagos State Government realizes that there is a second and deadly outbreak of EBOLA in the Democratic Republic of Congo. We were safe and protected health wise during the Fashola adminstration in Lagos State. Under the Ambode administration now, with this prevailing refuse situation, all Lagosians are like lambs to the slaughter.
Diseases like Malaria, Lassa Fever, Typhoid fever, yellow fever and God forbid Ebola might start attacking Lagosians on a very Large and dangerous scale. We hope the Commissioner for health in Lagos State Dr. Jide Idris and the Commissioner for the environment in Lagos State, are taking steps to clear this imposing refuse from Lagos State, in order to safeguard the lives and the health of Lagosians. We are watching and waiting.
Signed
Mohammed Fawehinmi, Esq
