The popular saying that no permanent enmity in politics but permanent interests did play out on Saturday, 7th of March 2020, as two political gladiators in Ogun State, who had been at each other’s throat since the 2019 general elections, former Governor Ibikunle Amosun and the incumbent Governor Dapo Abiodun, publicly embraced to the admiration of all present.

Governor Abiodun, sources said, had arrived the venue of the wedding of former Governor Gbenga Daniel’s son, Adebola Irede Daniel, in the company of his Oyo State counterpart, Engr. Oluseyi Makinde.

Amosun, now a Senator, reportedly arrived much later with a large entourage but allegedly avoided Governor Abiodun. Sources said that it was Otunba Gbenga Daniel, popularly called OGD, who later brought the duo together in a planned joint conversation.

”OGD was chatting with Governor Abiodun when Senator Amosun came in. After welcoming Amosun, he led him to where Abiodun and Makinde were waiting and both politicians had no option at that stage than to exchange greetings. I think it was a planned arrangement,” a source noted, adding that Governor Abiodun it was that extended his hand first and Amosun took it.

A gentleman, Governor Abiodun had earlier expressed his readiness to reconcile with Amosun. ”I have no doubt in my mind that the issues of misunderstanding would be resolved soon,” he had said soon after he was sworn in as Amosun’s successor.

Amosun had been crossed with the party and vowed not to back the party’s candidate, Abiodun, over the failure of his preferred candidate, Mr. Adekunle Akinlade, to emerge as its flag bearer, leading to the candidate and some of his associates crossing to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) to realise his ambition.
