This Lagos Sef Na wa. It is always amusing when people murmur everywhere I go that Governor Ambode’s love for Hip Hop music is getting more intense by the day. They even said that during the just concluded Lagos at 50 fiestas our amiable governor was so elated and was seen dancing to Olamide’s song ‘Wo” raising his legs and arms to the air. As much as many of the old-timers are not finding this development funny I wonder if anything can be done to change the status quo. Many of them have resolved to enjoy music in their cars, at home and social clubs. Gone were the days when state-sponsored events were organized to help promote music that was indigenous to our culture.
Governor Ambode’s special bond for many of today’s wonder kid is amazing. Ie Olamide, Davido, Wizkid etc I am still pondering on why our amiable governor prefers the new skools to the old-timers. Research finding has shown that men and women over 45 years of age always have a switch in musical taste and they get more advanced in thought with more serious-minded music like Apala, Sakara, Juju, Highlife, Afrobeat, etc. As a music collector, I bet to disagree it is not in all cases that such once in a lifetime experience happens to one. Everyman has a right to his musical taste.
Why are we blaming governor Ambode sef for his musical taste? Governor Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu didn’t hide his preference for the indigenous music Sakara. Governor Raji Fashola didn’t hide his preference for Ebenezer Obeys music and Victor Olaiya when he sponsored events to bring these musicians back to the limelight. At different occasions, I have seen Governor Fashola use Ebenezer Obey’s songs to deliver lectures in schools. I have also watched Asiwaju Tinubu’s different online videos where he effortlessly dances to Sakara music.
Will governor Ambode’s Hip Hop preference boost Musical Tourism in Lagos State?
The answer is blowing in the wind.
