The Nigerian Rugby scene will witness the entrant of a new Rugby Club which is going to be based within the Lagos Island Local Government Area of Lagos State.
The new Rugby Club which is called the Lagos Island Rugby Football Club and tagged “The Islanders” will be launched on Saturday 06 July 2019 at the Campus Square Stadia with a Rugby event tagged the “Governor’s Rugby Cup” which will form part of the new Rugby Club’s contribution to the celebration/inauguration of the new Executive Governor of Lagos State Mr Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu.
The establishment of the new Rugby Club is an initiative / brainchild of Mr Larinde Williams who is a politician from the community and has decided to use the beautiful game of Rugby to impact positively on the lives of the citizenry and in particular the youths of his constituency towards giving them an alternative sporting activity which will put food on the table for their families and bring them to limelight.
The auspicious event will be coming up at Campus Square Stadium on Saturday 06 July 2019 from 12noon to 4 pm and will witness a specially organised Rugby match featuring the Governor’s Rugby Select XV Team who will lock horns against the new club Lagos Island RFC representative team.
The new Rugby Club also intends to contribute its quota to rugby development through School’s Rugby programs for the Schools in its constituency. In line with this, two schools that are already playing Rugby will feature in a curtain raiser Seven – A – Side exhibition Rugby match to usher in the Governor’s Rugby Cup. And going forward, the Rugby Club will introduce the beautiful game to the schools.
According to the initiator of this program, Honourable Larinde Williams, “I am so passionate about the game of Rugby and my constituency that I have decided to give back to society through the Rugby initiative of establishing the Lagos Island Rugby Club and the Catch Them Young program in schools.”
Said he, “We have enlisted the assistance of a Rugby development guru in Nigeria with much experience who is popularly called ‘Mr Rugby’ – Ntiense Williams to help lay a good foundation for this futuristic Rugby and Community Development program for the restless young people in my constituency.”
Alongside the Lagos State Rugby Association and the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation, we hope to contribute our modest quota to the genuine development of this beautiful game of Rugby and get our youths to benefits therefrom.
As a politician, I strongly belief that we can use our political strength to benefit our youths through sports and in this case Rugby in particular which will also rid our society of social vices which are endemic in our communities. Government may not be able to do it alone, but their interest and endorsement of this project will greatly endear the populace to this incoming administration.
We look forward to well meaning individuals and cooperate bodies in and around Lagos to partner with us in this worthy course to the betterment of our society.
Amongst other dignitaries expected to grace the occasion will be the newly installed Executive Governor of Lagos State, notable politicians from the State and Lagos Island constituency, Lagos State Sports authorities led by the Chairman of the Lagos State Sports Commission, the Lagos State Rugby Association Board led by the Chairman and other board members, the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation big wigs led by the President, Rugby and Sports loving individuals just to mention a few.
Apart from the Governor’s Rugby Cup and Schools Exhibition matches, there will also be side attraction with up and coming artist from the community, comedians and music galore to thrill the audience.
