Animashun Samuel Perry, popularly known as Brodashaggi, broke the internet early this year with his unique style of comedy. He cut the character of a fine boy agbero which has been widely accepted. In this interview with City People’s PRECIOUS POMA, he talked about starting from Unilag, his career build up, what makes him stands out and more. Excerpts.
How did you get into comedy?
I started comedy many years ago and I did a lot of it while I was in the University. As an actor, I am good at creating different characters. While I was in school, I created characters such as Inspector Perry, a policeman and Akoni Ibadan, before I created Brodashaggi. Comedy is something I love doing, so that people can relate to it.
What about your family and educational background?
I have a Bachelor’s degree in Creative Arts from the University of Lagos. I am from Ogun State. My dad is late, he used to be a teacher. He taught dance and drama. My mom lives in Lagos. She is a trader, I have three siblings, I happen to be the first born and I have to take care of my mom and other siblings, which I think I’m trying and I need to do more cause she has always been there for me.
When and how did you start making Comedy skit?
I started making skit about five years ago and I have been doing Instagram skit for about four years now.
Where do you see yourself in the next five years?
I see myself in the best place I wish to be. See myself making more waves than I am doing now.
Most especially building people (Comedians) like me. Even though I play a role of a tout, nobody wants to be a tout. Some of the touts we see did not want to end up that way, but they found themselves there somehow.
How do you come up with your different skits.
I write them and I try to create my punch lines. I research well. It is actually not an easy task for me. I watch my skits with anyone around me several times before uploading them on the internet because they have to be good.
What other relationship do you have with Sophia (Aunty Shaggi)?
Yeah Sophia, she is my very good friend.
How did you met aunty Shaggi?
We meet last year November or December at a movie location. I shared my idea with her and we connected.
How did you come about the name Brodashaggi?
I went to my Mechanic workshop and I heard them playing around the character Brodashaggi and it really made me laugh. So, I taught of it since I could create characters, I could also create brodashaggi since I have done something similar to a stage play before. The name Shaggi just came first, then I did Shaggi and eventually brodashaggi.
What Inspired you to doing comedy?
Actually, my background inspired me into doing comedy, cause I was not born with a sliver spoon I was born with five fingers in my mouth, so basically my back ground inspired me.
How challenging was it for you?
Well, it has really not been easy, trying to be recognised is actually not an easy thing. I sent messages to people to help and support me, but some did not reply, but I still give praise to God because I kept doing what I love to do and it made a way for me at last and I am grateful.
Do you also do stand up comedy?
Yes, I also do stand up comedy.
How do you spend your free times?
I hang out with friends. Even when relaxing, an inspiration could come up and I would just type it out on my phone immediately.
Any favourite online comedian?
Oh yeah! So many of them. Everyone doing comedy is my favourite. I don’t engage in needless competition. Comedy is really not an easy thing. So, I appreciate and respect every one’s hard work.
What do you feel about the artiste you have worked with and the ones you look forward to working with?
I am looking forward to working with so many, and I have worked with few like Eniola Badmus, Mr Eazi, with a few to mention.
