Chidi Okonkwo isn’t just a name in Nigeria’s mobile phone industry; he’s a force of nature. For over two decades, Chidi has been the go-to expert for brands looking to crack the fiercely competitive Nigerian market. With his signature debonair charm, an easygoing personality, and a knack for spotting market trends before anyone else, Chidi has helped transform underdog brands into household names.
Two decades ago, while working at SIMS Nigeria Ltd, Chidi helped make Samsung a household name in Nigeria. Back then, Samsung was still an emerging brand, competing with giants like Nokia and Motorola. Chidi didn’t just sell phones—he built a movement. He spent days educating retailers about Samsung’s innovative features, nights organizing customer demos, and weekends building trust with a growing customer base.
Chidi’s approach was simple but effective. His passion and personalized service turned curious shoppers into loyal advocates. He also provided critical feedback to Samsung, helping them tailor products that fit perfectly with Nigerian tastes and budgets.
Samsung wasn’t the only brand to notice Chidi’s magic touch. Motorola came knocking, eager to tap into his expertise. Never one to shy away from a challenge, Chidi joined the company and worked his magic once again, boosting their market share and expanding their presence in Nigeria.
But Chidi’s biggest challenge—and his most remarkable success—came when Tecno, a relatively unknown Chinese brand, entered the Nigerian market. At the time, the market was dominated by established players, and Nigerian consumers were sceptical of new names. But Tecno knew what it was doing when it brought Chidi on board.
Chidi’s approach with Tecno was nothing short of revolutionary. He positioned the brand as affordable, reliable, and tailored to Nigerian needs. Whether it was durable batteries that could survive Nigeria’s notorious power outages or cameras designed to capture vibrant African skin tones, Tecno became synonymous with understanding the everyday Nigerian.
Today, Tecno isn’t just a popular phone brand—it’s a market leader in Nigeria’s Android segment. And thanks to Chidi’s guidance, it didn’t stop at phones. The company has become a partner in Nigeria’s growth story, engaging in corporate social responsibility projects that go beyond marketing. Tecno has provided solar-powered streetlights in underserved communities, brightening lives and boosting safety. The brand partnered with UNICEF Nigeria to support digital passports, ensuring children’s records are securely digitized. Tecno has also funded educational scholarships for Nigerian students, empowering the next generation of innovators. During the pandemic, Tecno distributed relief materials, including hygiene kits and food supplies, to struggling communities.
Chidi’s impact at Tecno didn’t go unnoticed. His vision and leadership earned him the top job as General Manager at Transsion Holdings, the parent company of Tecno, Infinix, and Itel. Under his watch, all three brands thrived, catering to different segments of the Nigerian market. While Tecno remained the go-to for mid-range phones, Infinix captured the trendy youth demographic, and Itel became the darling of budget-conscious consumers.
Behind every successful man is a strong support system, and Chidi is no exception. Married to his lovely wife and blessed with wonderful children, Chidi balances his high-stakes career with family life.
An Economics graduate from the University of Lagos, Chidi’s story isn’t just about sales figures or market shares. It’s about passion, persistence, and people. Brands don’t just hire Chidi for his expertise; they seek him out because he understands the heart of the Nigerian consumer. And as long as there are phones to sell and markets to conquer, Chidi Okonkwo will continue to be the man leading the charge.
