City People Magazine recorded a resounding success last year in its coverage of events and parties, as it covered over 500 parties across Nigeria. From early in the year 2021, the City People Event & Party crew made up of about 25 Reporters, 7 Photographers/Videographers intensified its activities as we began to travel to far-flung places like Uyo, Ilorin, Kogi, Abuja, Ekiti, Ondo, Ijebu-Ode, Osogbo, Ilesa, Ibadan, Abeokuta, Calabar and of course Lagos.
It was a hectic schedule for us, as we at times covered 8 events in a day. We thank all those who believed in us to have invited us to cover all their events, ranging from burials to chieftaincies and weddings. We specially appreciate all our friends who live abroad and who entrusted their events to us to cover.
As we start this year 2022, we are proud to showcase below, the range of events we covered last year, as we look forward to covering over 1,000 events this year. So help us God.
The year 2021 opened with Hajia Jemilah Ololade Lolak’s cousin who had a classy Hausa Traditional Wedding Ceremony (KAMU) in Lagos. The marriage was between the Bride (Amaria) UmmulkhairSanni-Usman and her groom (Ango) Ismail Olabode Shonibare, a proud Yoruba man.
The next point of call was Iperu-Remo, where the late Madam Comfort Olasumbo Adedoyin Odukoya popularly referred to as Naira was given a befitting burial. All the biggest names in Ogun State as well as Nollywood Yoruba actors were in attendance. As a matter of fact, Naira’s son Oluwafemi Ajibola equally stole the show from the US.
Let us quickly tell you how popular Lagos lawyer and society woman, Barr Ronke Ajide threw a classy remembrance party for her parents in Lagos. She invited some of the biggest Islamic Clerics to the event and completely shut down Surulere in January 2021.
The name Yetunde Isola is very popular among those who deal in fabrics in Nigeria. She is the CEO of Fabrics Rio. She clocked 55 in January 2021 and threw a big party at her Ogudu residence in Lagos. People flew in from the UK to attend her party. This classy and young-looking grandmother gave her guests one of the best parties of their lives.
What about the popular singer and multi-instrumentalist Demola Olota and his wife’s 20th wedding anniversary and renewal of marital vows? It was another superb owambe with proper COVID-19 protocols. It held inside the Omole Estate in Lagos.
On the 10th of February 2021, Ogijo-Remo stood still for a popular politician, philanthropist and businessman Otunba Opeyemi Agbaje and his beautiful wife, Toyin as they became the Bobagbimo and Yeye Bobagbimo of Ogijo-Remo. Our next point of call was Ikorodu where Olayinka Kehinde and her siblings gave their late mother, Madam FADEKE ELIZABETH KEHINDE in the Yewa Isawo area of Ikorodu in Lagos State an unforgettable burial ceremony.
In case you missed it, let’s remind you about the classy 40th birthday of the Onikogbo of Ikogbo, Oba Oluwadare Nurudeen Osoja threw for himself in Lagos. The event held on the 6th of March, 2021. Oba Oluwadare Osoja proved indeed that life begins at forty as he put up a five-star performance while dancing to different songs. His outfits portrayed royalty while the event held with serious considerations for all COVID-19 protocols.
2021 was not just about Owambes alone, there were top-notch corporate events too. The Family lifers app launched by Pastor Bisi Adewale was one of such. A family Life forum with deep Godly family values, Familylifers on Wednesday, March 11, 2020, launched at the popular Sheraton Hotel in Lagos. March wouldn’t be complete if the mention is not made of Engr James Funso’s classy 70th birthday bash. On Friday, March 19, 2021, the 10 Degrees Event Center in Oregun, Lagos came alive as family, friends and close associates gathered as a small crowd to celebrate an unsung hero of the Nigerian Oil and Gas industry. What about the burial ceremony of the mother of a very popular socialite, Otunba Peter Obafemi? The venue of the reception party was a huge talking point. BIC Event Center is a waterside venue just beside the Lagos Lagoon. The tranquillity and serenity of the venue added some glamour to the event. It wasn’t your regular venue where you find beggars harassing guests.
Amidst pomp and pageantry, fast-rising multi-talented singer, Ogeyemi Chameleon popularly known as the King held his 40th birthday celebration in Lagos on Sunday, April 11, 2021. The Wave Beach inside the Elegushi private beach and resort, the venue of the event suddenly became a home of concert as different musicians took to the stage to entertain guests. Then the next was a very special traditional marriage. On Saturday, April 17, 2021, two love birds Tosin Olugotun and Tobi Salako were joined in the traditional way. Tagged #T&T21, the event didn’t fall short of its expectation as a Lagos Owambe party. Top Lagos Society men and women, fabric merchants, politicians and members of the public all made the event memorable for the couple. What about the corporate woman, Prisca Ndu’s step on the 47th ladder? On Wednesday, April 28, 2021, was more special for her as she marked her 47th birthday and also bagged a doctorate degree. Men and women of timber and calibre from different walks of life came to honour this delectable woman in Lekki, Lagos.
And the royal fathers were not left out of the celebrations. It started with the Elerinmo of Erinmoland, Oba Dr. Michael Ajayi, Arowotawaya II who hosted more than 26 royal fathers at his palace. This happened on Sunday, April 25, 2021 when he threw a classy 1st-year remembrance party for his late mum, Pastor Mrs Sijuwola Sabaina Ajayi in Erinmo Ijesa. The Alara of Ilara Epe, Oba Dr Olufolarin Kayode Ogunsanwo joined the party in 2021 with his first Kilajolu Festival on the throne of his forefathers. On Saturday, May 15, 2021, the attention of Lagos was drawn to its annual Kilajolu Festival in a big way. After then was the coronation party of the Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Oba Kabiru Adewale Shotobi who honoured Otunba Yemi Lawal and his wife with a chieftaincy title on Sunday, May 23, 2021. May was closed with a banger. Prince Yommy Ogungbe, the CEO of De-Prinnoc construction company threw an elaborate party at his Badagry hometown on Sunday, May 30th, 2021 where it was all celebration galore. From political juggernauts to royal fathers and other notable celebrities, the event practically brought the ancient Badagry city back to life again. June opened with Al-Hameen International School holding a very special 30th anniversary and graduation ceremony. It was a colourful event that had some dignitaries and top private school owners in Lagos in attendance. Let’s also tell you that the event had some ingredients of a proper Naija owambe party. There was an Ankara Aso-Ebi in different designs and shapes, parents, alumni, teachers and all staffers of the school.
There were several burial parties in 2021 that your darling media platform covered. Many were very classy and here are some of those that made our top list.
The 10 Degrees Event Center in Oregun, Lagos received a different touch entirely on Sunday, June 20, 2021, as men of timber and calibre trooped in from all walks of life to celebrate the life of a woman of valour, Madam Tawakalitu Abebi Anifowoshe. It was a classy event that had many talking points. Starting from the car park, we literally lost count of the exotic cars that brought guests to the event. Name one exotic and we can tell you that someone rode in it to Mama Anifowoshe’s burial party. The Faith Music Band added life to the party while the guests went home rejoicing.
What about the burial of Chief Fola Clement Akinfe in Ondo town? It was a party that many people will not forget in a long while. He was laid to rest on Friday, July 2nd, 2021 but activities had started since Thursday, July 1st, with commendation service and service of songs. The classy two-day event had the crème-de-la-crème of the ancient city of Ondo in attendance, professionals from all walks of life within the country and in the US, and most notably, members of the Ondo State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development and the Nigeria Town Planners Association, Ondo State chapter. Yinka Ayefele thrilled at the reception party.
Have you seen a party where 2 top Fuji musicians were playing simultaneously? It happened live on Saturday, June 25, 2021. The children of late business mogul, Alhaji Abdulwaheed Adisa Odunbaku threw a classy burial party for their father. Men of timber and calibre from all walks of life, movie icons and fast-rising stars gathered at the party to celebrate the man who had made a huge impact in life.
Family friends and loved ones on Sunday, July 18, 2021, gathered at the Odukoya compound beside the Lapa Hotel, Free Trade Zone, Ibeju Lekki to celebrity a life well spent after a decade of demise. It was the 10th year remembrance party held in honour of the late Icon of the C&S Aladura in Ibeju Lekki and the entire Lagos axis, Most Venerable Noah Odugbesan Odukoya popularly known as Baba Ole.
Did you miss the gists from the burial of Chief Adebola Ashiru of the Ashiru Dynasty in Ijebu-Ode? Not to worry, you have a brief highlight here. It all started on Wednesday, July 28, 2021, at the Ascension Church of Anglican Communion, Lagos Diocese, Ikeja in Lagos while the grand finale held in Ijebu-Ode, his home town. From London to Lagos and finally Ijebu-Ode, it was the celebration of a life that was not just well spent but adjudged successful in every sense of it.
August opened with a special occasion. Was-Lat Schools was established in 1996 and it clocked 25. It had an elaborate celebration in Lagos to mark its Silver Jubilee. The event which held at the newly renovated Glover Memorial Hall in the heart of Lagos Island was filled to the brim as parents, teachers, pupils, management, staff, friends, well-wishers and many more trooped in to celebrate this great citadel of learning.
Ade Bakare is a force to reckon with in the fashion industry. He started his trade in 1991 and has since taken it beyond the shores of Nigeria. This dynamic designer and creative thinker has written the name of the country in gold everywhere he went. On Saturday, July 31st, 2021, Ade Bakare gathered the crème-de-la-crème in the Nigerian fashion industry gathered at the Wheatbaker Hotel in Ikoyi Lagos, to celebrate this icon as he clocked 30 years in the fashion world.
Dipo Doherty, the son of a former Lagos PDP Chairman, Deji Doherty, married his heartthrob Damilola on Saturday, August 14 2021. The event pulled crowds from all walks of life and most astonishing of all was the presence of the foremost Yoruba monarch, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, the Ooni of Ife. Tagged #DIVALAVIDA2021, a Spanish coinage that meant Dipo and Dami forever, the event could not be described as lesser than classy. The Aso-Ebi made a big difference while the music was super awesome.
The Alara of Ilara Epe, Oba Dr Olufolarin Kayode Ogunsanwo was in the limelight again when he held a week-long activity to mark his first coronation anniversary. The week-long activity to mark this successful one year started on Monday, August 16, 2021, and ended on Sunday, August 22, 2021. Activities were lined up for each day, thanks to the capable anniversary planning committee that had the likes veteran broadcaster, Mrs Funke Moore and Dr Taiwo O. Salaam and many other notable Lagosians as members.
On Saturday, August 21, 2021, popular businessman, Afo Guarantor added another star to his rank. He became the Sobaloju of Gbagura Kingdom while his wife, Chief Mrs Olasunmbo Abiola Sodunke became the Yeye Sobaloju of Gbagura Kingdom. But that wasn’t the only activity that marked the 2nd coronation anniversary of the Agura of Gbagura, Oba Saburee Bakre. Let’s quickly remind you that Oba Bakre also honoured some prominent Nigerians at the event. Over 15 individuals went away with different chieftaincy titles. Names like the popular Wale Saranda of Lagos and his beautiful wife were among those that bagged titles in Gbaguraland.
Many will still remember the late chief Mrs. Aarinola Susan Aduramo Rotimi, Baaye of Egbaland who passed on in July 2021. Meanwhile, different groups of people organized different meetings on each day to mark the 4-day burial ceremony that started on Tuesday, August 24, and ended on Friday, August 27, 2021. The grand finale was a reception party at the Haven Event Center in Lagos. The Nigerian Immigration Service threw its weight behind the former officer.
Fidelis Duker, the popular Nigerian filmmaker also made the list of those that threw big parties in 2021. This time around, it was a special birthday party for his mother-in-law, Mrs Waleola Titilayo Benjamin who turned 70. The party held on Saturday, August 28, and popular actor cum movie maker Allwell Ademola was on the bandstand.
Fine Coat Boss, Apostle Remi Awode turned 58 in style and his staff took out time to surprise him in a big way. On Tuesday, September 7, 2021, Dr Awode held his 58th birthday celebration inside the Chemstar Industries Facility. It was remarkable, indeed, as family members, friends, loved ones, Chemstar’s staffers, distributors and business partners all gathered to celebrate this great business icon and a remarkable chemist.
October started with a banger as Nana Fatima bagged a chieftaincy title far way in Abeokuta. Sounds of drums and chants of cultural music greeted individuals on Friday, October first, 2021 as a mammoth crowd gathered at the Palace of the Olowu of Owu, HRH Oba Dr Olusanya Adegboyega to celebrate with his royal highness as he confers the title of Yeye Oge of the Owu Kingdom on one of Naija’s most beautiful society women, Chief Mrs Nana Fatima Martins.
It was a moment of mixed emotions at the Olorunwo Cathedral of the C&S Church Gbagada on Friday, September 17, 2021, when a mammoth crowd gathered from different parts of the country to celebrate the life of Primate Olorunwo, a man who had made a lot of impact in his 85 years sojourn on earth. His burial rites started on Wednesday with a Service of songs, Christian wake on Thursday, while the final burial took place that Friday. Top politicians like ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo, Ex-Governor Gbenga Daniel and Senator Ibikunle Amosun led the list of dignitaries that were spotted.
The children, family and friends of the late Madam Rasheedat Iyabode Olajire Raji made a huge statement on Thursday, October 14 and Friday, October 15, 2021, as they threw memorable funeral rites for their beloved mother. Starting from the Christian wake, the event experienced a huge turnout so much that the entire Aga community of Ikorodu was practically locked down. The event wasn’t just about the crowd alone, the people that mattered in the society trooped in to celebrate this well-spent life.
As October was gradually winding down, the Gbagada and Victoria Island areas of Lagos were completely shut down on Friday, October 22, 2021, as the remains of the wife of the late President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mrs Kudirat Atinuke Aka-Bashorun was committed to the mother earth. Amidst tears, glitz and glamour, the beautiful mother and grandmother was also regarded by all as beautiful inside and out. Call it a state burial and you may not be so wrong because all the crème-de-la-crème on the Lagos social scene were either present or fully represented. Starting with the Jagaban Borgu of Lagos, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, down to the Minister of and Housing, H/E Mr Babatunde Raji Fashola, the incumbent governor of Lagos State, H/E Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Nigerian Bar Association and many other top dignitaries were among those that sent their condolences to the Aka-Bashorun and Fujah families in Lagos.
Prophetess Mary Olubori and her husband, Pastor Israel Olubori joined the league of big party hosts in 2021. It was the year they marked the 25th anniversary of the Rock of Salvation Apostolic Church (ROSAC). The event, took place at the Classique Events Centre on 7a, Kudirat Abiola Way, Oregun-Ikeja, Lagos. It had all the top dignitaries in attendance, starting from Royal Fathers to top politicians, movie stars and entertainers, the list was endless.
What started as a regular traditional marriage between Taiwo Ariyibi and Damilola Ojo on Friday, October 29, 2021, ended up becoming a big party, thanks to the influence of the bride’s father, Akogun Stephen Abiodun Ojo. It was indeed a classy 2-day celebration that had all the big-wigs on the social scene in attendance. The wedding ceremony proper was another talk of the town party. It held at the St Charles Borromeo Church, 1004 Estate, V.I.; while the reception party took place at the prestigious Lekki Coliseum, Lagos. Nollywood star, Alesh Onilegbale was one of the big celebrants in November 2021. On the 4th of the penultimate month of the year, he threw a classy 2-in-1 party where he marked his birthday and also wedded his heartthrob. The Eagle Club Event Center opposite the Shoprite on Adeniran Ogunsanya Street in Surulere hosted all the big names in the Yoruba movie industry as they all came in their numbers to celebrate one of their own. Let’s also remind you that most of the guests stunned in the black and touch of gold lace Aso-Ebi but that wasn’t just all. There were other smaller groups with different party Aso-Ebi for the same event. K1 was on the microphone on this big day and everyone partied till dawn.
Alhaji Surv. Kareem Abdulrahman, a husband, father and teacher for many celebrated his 55th birthday in style. The M.R.A Hall, inside Magodo Phase II Estate in Lagos, hosted some of his family members, friends, associates and loved ones to a grand party where there was more than enough to eat, drink and toast to. The popular saying that the older the wine, the better was again proven to be true as 2 celebrity lovers, Basirat Funmilayo Faloye and Olawale Philip Adeniran took their love affair to another level, by tying the knot. It was a moment that anyone would cherish and forever appreciate, as this very special couple on Sunday, December 19, 2021, shut down Lagos as the crème-de-la-crème on the social scene made the venue the next point of call.
December was quite busy but then, Olori Beatrice Aina Adewale’s burial in Lagos stood out. On Thursday and Friday, December 23 and 24 2021, the city of Lagos went agog as a classy burial was thrown to celebrate the life and time of Queen Beatrice Aina Adewale, a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who passed on at the ripe age of 98. The burial was far from mourning, it can be best described as a carnival. Everything put in place for an effective ceremony was top-notch. Starting from the entourage that went to pick Mama’s remains from the morgue, down to the Christian wake, church service, the internment and reception party, there were a series of talking points that painted the kind of life Mama Adewale lived.
