Dele saw Kemi at his sister’s party. He had known her since she was a toddler but she did not know. He kept going to her table to ask if she and her friends had all they needed. He was trying to get her attention but she barely noticed him. He wanted her by all means and then set out to get her.
Kemi is a single mother of two children, who left an abusive marriage after seven years. it was the worst seven years of her life, she was constantly abused and molested by her husband and her in-laws. Finally, after seven years she decided that she had had enough and needed to leave for the sake of her daughter. Being an only daughter of a pastor, it was almost taboo but luckily for her, her parents accepted her back home hoping that her husband would come around. Kemi slipped into depression, she got suicidal a couple of times. Her mother entered her room one morning after another “suicide episode”. Her mother simply told her that “if you kill yourself, your ex-husband will come for the children and they will SUFFER.” that was the wake-up call Kemi needed. She wasn’t going to let her children suffer so she began working on herself, she stopped beating up herself and accepted what had happened to her.
She got herself together, went on some refresher courses, and launched her PR outfit. She threw herself into work after her business was beginning to stabilize, she decided it was time for her to have a social life. Her decision to have a social life began to pay off, she met more people and got more clients for herself. Kemi was in a better place now, mentally, financially, and psychologically. The only thing was that she wasn’t sure she wanted to get into a relationship. She noticed how Dele kept coming to her table but she just thought he was just being a good host. She had a good time at the party.
A few weeks later, her intercom rang and when she picked it was Dele.
“Hi Kemi, this Dele, I was in your neighborhood and decided to stop over to say thank you for coming to Bola’s birthday,” he said.
“Hi Uncle Dele, it was my pleasure” Kemi replied
“Can I come upstairs to your office?” Dele asked
“Not a good time sir, I have some clients here” She quickly replied wondering why he would be inviting himself upstairs, “what kind of over-familiarity is that?” she muttered under her breath.
She hung up and went on with her business, she had forgotten about him. when she closed for the day, she noticed a car was parked behind her car, she was angry and wondered why anyone in his/ her sense will park this close behind anyone’s car when there are spaces in the compound, as she walked close to the car, the door opens and Dele steps out. She was shocked, she almost dropped her phone.
Dele quickly apologized “I am so sorry to startle you; I have a feeling that you did not want to see me so I decided to just wait here”
Too embarrassed to talk, Kemi smiled.
“I want to take you out for lunch tomorrow,” Dele said
Kemi quickly brought out her iPad like she wanted to check her diary, she told him she wasn’t available that week, but she would make herself available the next week.
“Next week is perfect for me,” Dele said.
“Can I have your number?” He asked
She gave him her number. He gets back into the car and leaves. She waited for him to drive off before she got into her car. With mixed feelings, she drove off.
She couldn’t get him out of her mind.
What does he want?
What does he want to discuss with me?
He is a married man so what can he possibly want from me?
Or is he divorced now? She remembered his sister telling her once that her brother was planning on filing for divorce.
Dele made it a point of duty to call her at least twice a day, sometimes she picked up, and sometimes she did not, however she made sure that she did not return any of his calls if she missed his call, she never called back.
Time flew by so fast and the next week was here, she had promised and she had to make good her promise, she found herself carefully picking a dress that she knew complemented her skin colour and her figure too. she took time to look good. Kemi had never been heavy on the makeup, so she looked really simple.
She intentionally delayed for about thirty minutes, and when she finally arrived, she walked in. He stood up as she walked towards the table where he was, for the first time she noticed his height, his smooth skin, and his dentition, suddenly she started feeling nervous. How can she start feeling this way? It was the first time she was actually “seeing” him. He is a fine-looking man. They got talking, and she had planned with her executive assistant before leaving the office that once she got there, she would text her EA to call her. But Dele was fun to be with, they had lunch, it was a three-course meal, and even long after they finished eating, they were still talking. Dele has a fantastic sense of humor.
Their lunch date soon became a regular thing, it became a weekly affair. After a while, they started seeing themselves more frequently. He spent a lot of time with her and she concluded in her mind that he had to be single, no married man would spend this much time away from home, she told herself. They soon started sleeping with each other, the first time they had sex, she was very nervous, it was going to be her first time in over 3 years that her marriage had broken, it was a beautiful experience. She was falling in love. After that first night, she let her guard down. She never allowed him in her house because of her children but she would sometimes spend time in his house and even on weekends. He has two children from two women but there was no single picture of a woman in the house. For the first time in years, Kemi found herself thinking about marriage again.
They had gone clubbing one Friday night and as usual, she had slept over at his place. As she was about to leave in the morning, he told her that his wife would be arriving the next week.
“Wife?” how? Are you married? How come you never said anything about being married?
“You never asked” He replied
We have been together for over one year and you are just telling me?
Dele went on to explain that those trips to the UK were to see his wife and son. His wife had gone to the UK for her master’s degree and now she is done and is coming back home.
But I have been sleeping over and I have not seen anything that belongs to a woman here and that was when he explained that, his matrimonial home is in another part of the town. And this place wasn’t his home.
Kemi sank into the chair…….
THE REALITY
I can guess what is going on in your head right now. she must have been careless, right? The truth is this kind of thing has happened to a lot of women, it is happening presently and it will continue to happen.
When you start liking a man, please ask him questions. Assumptions can be a killer, don’t assume. it will save you from heartbreak. Do what you have to do to know more about him before your emotions take over. It is always more difficult when emotions take over.
