  • What He Said At Dr. OSOBA’s 90th Birthday

Renowned historian and activist, Dr. Samuel Segun Osoba, recently marked his 90th birthday. The event brought together family, friends, and associates, who paid glowing tributes to the man widely regarded as a beacon of social justice and integrity. Among those who spoke was the Ajalorun of Ijebu Ife, Oba Adesesan Oguntayo, who shared heartfelt memories of their early days at Ijebu Ode Grammar School and reflected on the admirable qualities that have defined Dr. Osoba’s life.

The highly respected monarch, who was a junior colleague to Dr. Osoba at the prestigious school, described him as a man of unwavering principles. He recounted personal experiences that have endeared him to the historian for decades, referring to him affectionately as “Comrade” and “my senior.”

“I joined Ijebu Ode Grammar School in 1952. Back then, you never called your seniors by their names—it was a mark of respect. Dr. Segun Osoba was my senior, and even then, his character stood out.

I recall one particular incident during morning service. My senior, Comrade Osoba, was accused of an offense. Reverend Nicolas, or perhaps it was Reverend Awonusi, called him out to the stage and sentenced him to six lashes.

As the lashes were administered, he stood firm, showing no sign of pain or remorse. His face reflected his belief that the punishment was unjust. Seeing this, the principal threatened to give him another six lashes, but even then, he remained stoic and unwavering. That day, we all saw him as a principled man—someone who would stand his ground no matter the circumstances.”

Oba Oguntayo further highlighted Dr. Osoba’s courage during his encounters with the military government in later years, particularly his confrontations with former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

“Dr. Osoba showed the same resilience and courage he had as a young man. He stood his ground, even in the face of immense pressure, and the whole country took notice. That unwavering commitment to justice and fairness is what sets him apart.”

The Ajalorun also shared a lighter moment from their relationship when he ascended the throne of Ijebu Ife.

“When I became the Ajalorun of Ijebu Ife, people suggested that I go and greet Dr. Osoba because he was my senior. I said, ‘No, he should come and greet me as the traditional ruler and now his father.’ When he heard this, he agreed and came to greet me, acknowledging my position as a royal father.

Still, I gave him the honor he deserved as my senior and a man I deeply respect. That mutual respect has always been a hallmark of our relationship.”

Oba Oguntayo expressed his joy at being part of Dr. Osoba’s 90th birthday celebration.

“When Kabiesi Olowu informed me that Dr. Osoba would be here, I made it a point to attend. I’ve seen him evolve from a young student to a national hero and now an elder statesman.

It is an honor to celebrate someone who has inspired so many with his principles, courage, and commitment to justice. My senior, congratulations on this remarkable milestone. Wishing you long life and prosperity.”

Dr. Samuel Segun Osoba’s 90th birthday celebration was not just an event to honor his life but a testament to the values he has upheld and the lives he has touched. From his days at Ijebu Ode Grammar School to his national and international influence, Dr. Osoba remains a beacon of integrity and a symbol of hope for future generations.
