How I Composed My Hit Song, Olorun To Tobi

Mosunmola Olaitan, aka Mosun Exalter, is one of the very young gospel singers in town. Her music inspires the soul. She is the original composer of ‘Olorun To Tobi’, a song that has become a household song.  The song is popular across all denominations; both the young and old love to sing it. Even many established gospel singers sing the song to spice up their shows. City People’s Reporter, Jamiu Abubakar watched Mosun Exalter and her band perform at a family event in Lagos recently. She was extremely good and her well-composed band did well in supplying the needed back up which spiced up the ceremony. After she concluded her show, she told City People why she went into gospel music and why she sang her hit track, ‘Olorun to Tobi’. Read and enjoy!

I just watched your performance and I must say you had an excellent show. Tell me, for how long have you been doing gospel music?

I would say 6 years now but I have been with other gospel ministers for about 10 to 15 years. Officially for me, I started 6 years ago.

Can you mention the gospel ministers you have worked with?

I have been with Okiki Apoti Eri, I have been with a crew called The Ultimate Crew. I was with them for a long time but after I left, I started my ministry too, that was six years ago.

How has it been since you started your ministry 6 years ago?

It has been great, with the help of God. It has been challenging and it has really exposed me but we thank God for His grace.

Why did you choose to go into gospel music?

This gospel thing is a call for me. It is a covenant that has been with me even before birth. So, I just needed to walk in line with the covenant and fulfill the purpose. For me, it’s a calling.

Tell us more about the said covenant before your birth?

Most times, things like that are shrouded in mystery and they are hidden and peculiar to the person carrying the vision. Let me make it simple, it is like an assignment. I just have to do it. I was brought up in a fasting and prayerful family. While I was seeking the face of God, it came to me as a vision that this is what I have created you for and this is what I want you to do. Since then, I have been walking in that path. Then, I was very young. I was still in secondary school. We thank God for where we are.

How do you go about composing your songs, they are very original and unique?

Some of my songs come from the Scriptures. Some of them come in my sleep. Once I hear a chorus, I would quickly wake up to record it and write it down. Then, I would build the verses myself. Sometimes, I listen to songs of my mentors. They always inspire me to write something similar to theirs.

Who are your mentors?

I have so many mentors.

They are far and near. I have mummies in the ministry; The likes of Mummy Tope Alabi, Mummy Bekes and Mummy Bola Are; the list is endless.

How did you get the inspiration to compose your hit song “Olorun to Tobi”?

It’s God, God is the giver of all good gifts. That’s the reason why I titled the song ‘Olorun to Tobi’. Actually, ‘Olorun to Tobi’ is just like every other chorus that I wrote down. I never knew it would become a hit. I would say it’s not my doing but the grace of God. The song was just like every other choruses that I have written but we thank God.

How did you feel when you got to know that the song started making waves?

I was happy and excited. I just know this is a tip of the ice berg. I know that if God can do this, it means He has a whole lot in store for me. It’s just a confirmation of where God is taking me to.

Yes

How many have you done over the years?

I have done one album with five tracks. Currently, I’m working on another one. It has eleven tracks. By the grace of God, it should be out by January. So you should be expecting something from me very soon by the grace of God.
