Distinguished Members of the Island Club, Lagos converged at the Peacock Hall of the prestigious club on Friday 29th October, 2021to rejoice and celebrate the coming of age of the club at 78th.
It was also to commemorate Nigeria’s 61st Independence Anniversary.Thst was why the club also held an Independence lecture.
Former Nigerian President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo was the Guest Speaker. He delivered a thoughtful and highly incisive lecture on “Social Responsibility In Nation Building-Island Club As a Case Study”.
During his presentation, the former president charged members of the Island Club and Nigerians at large to adopt the INFORM acronyms which means: Interrogate, Note, Familiarise, Organise, Reform and Maintain. He said those are ways to contribute meaningfully to nation-building.
For those who don’t know much about the Island Club,let us quickly tell you that the
Island Club is a vibrant social club that was founded on 29th October, 1943 by eminent men of substance like Sir Adeyemi Alakija, Chief S.O. Gbadamosi, J.H. Davis, Sir Odunmegwu Ojukwu, Chief JK Randle, Sir. A.O. Omololu, Ernest S. Ikoli, Sir. Lious Mbanefo and many other of blessed memories. Many do not know that
members of the club contributed immensely to the attainment of Nigeria’s Independence in 1960.
The Chairman of the club, Otunba Kehinde Shitta during his speech, spoke about the essence of the independence lecture which he said was to create awareness on Nation building. He said that was why they invited former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo as guest speaker.
He added that the club is bent on ensuring the cardinal principles of comradeship and fellowship of the club is adhered to.
The ceremony was massively attended by top dignitaries from far and near, as they were fully on ground to felicitate, with the members and guests of the esteemed club.
Notable among them are Chief Olu Falomo; HRH Oba Adedoyin Salisu, the Lamodi of Ijebu Isiwo; Otunba Johnson Fasawe; Senator Kola Bajomo from Ogun state; Ambassador Yomi Akintola; Prince Ademola Dada, Chief Ayodeji Randle, President of Ikeja Club; Arc. Wunmi Agbaje, Chairman Yoruba Tennis Club, and representatives from other notable social clubs in the state.
Part of the activities marking the day were a cocktail reception, Anniversary party, Investiture ceremony, induction of new members and Merriments.
Music Icon, Evangelist Ebenezer Obey Fabiyi and his band gave a classic performance on stage. Members of the club and their guests had fun all through the night.
