…With Social Media
-
Dr. OREOLUWA FINNIH (S.A To LAGOS Gov.)
In recent years, social media has become an essential part of everyday life, especially for the youth. From staying in touch with friends and family to accessing the latest news and trends, social media platforms have revolutionized communication. However, with the growing influence of social media, there are also concerns about its impact on society. This was the central theme of the recently concluded Social Media Hangout 5.0, organized by Bodex F. Hungbo at the Landmark Center in Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria.
The event, which gathered social media enthusiasts, influencers, and thought leaders, was aimed at raising awareness about the power of social media and how it can be used positively. The theme for the event was “Social Media: The Influence, Power, and Impact.” Among the key speakers was Dr. Oreoluwa Finnih, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Government on Sustainable Development Goals. Dr. Finnih represented Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who, unfortunately, could not attend due to pressing state matters. During her lecture, Dr. Finnih shed light on the government’s perspective regarding social media, its potential, and the challenges it poses.
THE DOUBLE-EDGED SWORD OF SOCIAL MEDIA
Dr. Oreoluwa Finnih began her address by drawing an interesting comparison. She likened social media to a knife – a tool that can be used for both good and bad, depending on how it is wielded. According to Dr. Finnih, the Lagos State Government recognizes the importance of social media and believes it can be a force for good if used appropriately. She highlighted that social media has revolutionized communication, allowing people to access news and information almost instantly. Whether it’s sharing updates about an emergency, promoting important health messages, or spreading awareness about crucial social issues, social media has become a powerful tool for disseminating information quickly.
Furthermore, Dr. Finnih emphasized that social media can serve as a platform for engagement, where citizens can voice their opinions, ask questions, and hold the government accountable. This two-way communication is crucial for the government as it helps them understand the concerns of the people. By interacting with the public on these platforms, the Lagos State Government can better address issues that matter most to its citizens.
Social media also offers economic opportunities for young people. Dr. Finnih spoke about how social media platforms are creating avenues for entrepreneurship and innovation. Many young Nigerians have used social media to launch businesses, promote their creative talents, and generate income. Social media has become a marketplace for everything, from fashion to technology to digital services. By supporting these creative industries, the Lagos State Government hopes to empower young people and help them build sustainable careers in the digital age.
THE DARK SIDE OF SOCIAL MEDIA
However, while Dr. Finnih acknowledged the positive potential of social media, she also highlighted the challenges that come with its widespread use. One of the most pressing issues, according to Dr. Finnih, is the addictive nature of social media. With young people spending hours scrolling through their feeds, it has become a concern for both parents and the government. Excessive use of social media can lead to problems such as poor academic performance, disrupted sleep patterns, and even strained personal relationships. But more concerning is the impact of social media on mental health.
For many young people, social media can create feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt. Dr. Finnih pointed out that platforms like Instagram and Snapchat, where users often post carefully curated and edited images of their lives, can create unrealistic standards of beauty and success. Young people, particularly teenagers, may feel pressured to conform to these standards, leading to issues such as low self-esteem, body dysmorphia, and anxiety. The constant comparison to others can be damaging to one’s mental well-being, and the government is aware of these challenges.
THE SPREAD OF FAKE NEWS AND “CANCEL CULTURE”
Dr. Finnih also warned about the dangers of misinformation. The rapid spread of fake news on social media has become a serious concern globally. False information can quickly go viral, causing panic, confusion, and even inciting violence. She stressed the importance of critical thinking and urged social media users, particularly the youth, to verify the information they come across before sharing it. She also acknowledged that many individuals and organizations have taken advantage of social media to spread malicious or false narratives, which can have serious consequences.
Another issue raised by Dr. Finnih was the phenomenon of “cancel culture” on social media. Cancel culture refers to the practice of publicly shaming or boycotting individuals or brands due to perceived wrongdoings. While this can be a way to hold people accountable for their actions, it can also lead to extreme reactions and unfair consequences. Dr. Finnih emphasized the need for balance, suggesting that the public should avoid rushing to judgment and instead allow room for forgiveness and personal growth. In a society as diverse as Lagos, where individuals are constantly learning from one another, it is important to approach mistakes with understanding rather than condemnation.
THE GOVERNMENT’S ROLE IN NAVIGATING SOCIAL MEDIA CHALLENGES
Despite the challenges, the Lagos State Government recognizes the value of social media and is determined to harness its potential for the benefit of society. The government sees social media as an essential tool for connecting with citizens, especially the youth. To this end, Dr. Finnih shared how the government is leveraging social media platforms to promote sustainable development goals (SDGs), raise awareness about important social issues, and engage with the public in real-time.
The Lagos State Government is committed to supporting initiatives that use social media in positive ways. They are working to create programs that promote digital literacy, teach responsible online behavior, and help young people develop skills that will be beneficial in the digital economy. In particular, the government is focusing on the creative industries, which have flourished thanks to social media. By providing support to young entrepreneurs and digital creators, the Lagos State Government hopes to foster an environment of innovation and growth.
Dr. Finnih also discussed the importance of setting boundaries and regulating the use of social media, particularly among the younger generation. Parents and educators play a crucial role in helping young people understand how to use social media responsibly. The government is working with schools and community organizations to raise awareness about online safety, privacy, and the mental health effects of excessive social media use.
In conclusion, Dr. Oreoluwa Finnih’s address at the Social Media Hangout 5.0 emphasized that while social media comes with its challenges, its potential to positively influence society cannot be ignored. The Lagos State Government is committed to harnessing the power of social media to connect with the public, promote economic opportunities, and raise awareness about important issues. At the same time, the government acknowledges the need to address the negative aspects of social media, such as addiction, mental health issues, and the spread of misinformation.
As we continue to navigate the digital age, it is essential that both the government and citizens work together to ensure that social media remains a force for good. By promoting responsible use, supporting innovation, and encouraging meaningful dialogue, Lagos State is leading the way in using social media to engage the youth and build a better future for all.
