Dr. Mrs. Moyosore Makinde, (CMD) MBBS (Ibadan), FMCFM, FWACP, is a Consultant Family Physician and the Chief Medical Director of the Soteria Maternity and Hospital Lagos, owned by CLAM Church. She had her undergraduate training at the University College Hospital, University of Ibadan after which she had her postgraduate specialist training in Family Medicine and obtained the Fellowships of both the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and the West African College of Physicians. Her special interests are in Family Health, Maternal and Child Health and Mental Health. She is a certified instructor in the Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) course. Prior to joining Soteria Hospital and Maternity, she had worked in various private and public health establishments including the Lagos University Teaching Hospital. She is a member of the Nigerian Medical Association. Her hobbies include singing and reading. Dr (Mrs) Makinde is happily married and blessed with children.

Can you tell us about Soteria Maternity and Hospital? What’s your mode of operation?

Soteria Maternity and Hospital has recorded many successful surgeries in the space of 3years. Can you tell us about them?
Yes! We have recorded many surgeries that were successful to the glory of God. One of them that is very recent is the case of a man that underwent a complex brain surgery. He was rushed here when he went into coma, an MRI was done and the diagnosis was that he had Sub-acute Subdural Haematoma (collection of blood between the brain and the skull). He was immediately rushed to the Theatre and a Consultant Neurosurgeon performed a successful three-hour surgery on him, and in Less than 48 hours after the surgery he started using his hands and legs again.
That is just one of the many testimonies we’ve recorded so far. Another peculiar one is the case of Surgery. We have carried out many surgeries successfully, many successful deliveries to the glory of God. And I want to thank the God of CLAM, the God our Parents in the Lord in person of Pastor Wole and Pastor Mrs Bukola Oladiyun, and also thanking them for giving the Hospital all the necessary support, because by the grace of God Soteria Maternity Hospital is well equipped with modern equipment.
What is your message to people out there about Soteria Maternity Hospital?
By the grace of God Soteria Maternity Hospital is well equipped with modern equipment. Our Operating Theatre is fully equipped with state-of-the art equipment where all emergency surgical operations and other surgeries can be performed at short notice. The availability of an on-call Consultant Surgeon round the clock enhances the quality of services provided to the sick when necessary.
Our services here include Family medicine Radiography, obstetrics & Gynaecology, Pharmacy, Paediatrics and Surgical services. We also have a standard Diagnostic Laboratory. Then our In-Patient service realized that Hospitals can be frightening places for children. Most children associate a visit to the hospital with pain- sharp needles, stinging lotions. Aware of the psychology of the child, we have made our wards child friendly.
The ambience is welcoming for patients needing inpatient admission. Children with non – critical medical and surgical problems are accommodated here and nursed back to health. All our newborn babies and children initially admitted in the Intensive Care Units would be transferred to the paediatric ward to continue treatment until they are fit for discharge home. Each floor has a nursing station uniquely designed, manned round the clock by nursing staff. There are “nurse call systems” installed in each room which are easy to access and identify by parents.
Pressing a button will deliver a visible indicator as well as an audible warning at the nurse station indicating to the nursing staff that attention to the child is needed. Also our In-patient services ensure maintenance of quality and in essence guarantee that medical orders / instructions given by the admitting consultant are carried out and executed by the designated nursing and junior pediatric house staff.
What about our Emergency Room (ER) we have a strategically located Emergency Room with easy accessibility. It is manned round the clock by a team of trained personnel to handle all emergencies and skilled emergency room nursing staff. The Emergency Room contains all the necessary drugs required for the treatment of any emergency. The medicines are checked every day and are maintained 24 hours a day. It also contains all the other equipment required for emergency management of the airway and for establishing an artificial airway, inserting venous lines into major blood vessels to administer medications and intravenous fluids.
And our Night time Emergency Care is also in place, we know that adults and children alike can fall sick at any time of the day or night, and more often than not, without any prior notice or warning. With this in mind, we have ensured the availability of relevant consultants on call. At anytime, night or day, any adult or child brought to the Emergency Room for care, parents or families can be rest assured that consultants are available to address crucial issues and direct the care of the sick child or adult effectively.
Then close proximity of essential diagnostic services for the critically injured persons to ensure rapid diagnostic testing and reporting for quick decision to be taken by our medical team, the Radiology department is located at the basement.
