Alhaja Lanre Hassan, popularly known as Iya Awero, is a true icon in the Nigerian film industry. With a career spanning over six decades, she has made a lasting mark on Nollywood.
Iya Awero began her acting journey in 1964 with stage plays before transitioning to home videos as the industry evolved. She has taken on many roles, particularly in traditional plays like Efunsetan Aniwura, which helped establish her as a prominent figure.
Recently, the City People Magazine team, led by the publisher, visited Iya Awero to celebrate her contributions to the industry. During the visit, she expressed how theatre has been a blessing in her life. She shared her gratitude for following her passion, which allowed her to support and raise her children.
Iya Awero believes that theatre is not just for entertainment; it serves as a powerful tool for teaching and inspiring people. This has always been her goal throughout her career. In 1978, she and some colleagues founded the “Awadakerikeri” organization to blend entertainment.
She also spoke about personal challenges she faced along the way, including the heartbreaking loss of two of her children. Despite these hardships, she emphasizes that her guiding principle—“Contentment and focus has helped her persevere.
Iya Awero remains active in the industry, currently appearing in the popular series Tinsel, along with other projects that excite her audience.
