Just-In: Court adjourns Metuh’s trial on health ground

An Abuja Federal High Court was forced to adjourn the trial of the former spokesman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olisa Metuh after he arrived the court on a stretcher.
Justice Abang had ordered Metuh to appear in court today or have his bail revoked and returned to prison custody after he failed to turn up for his trial in January.
But at the resumed hearing, the ex-journalist was brought into the court on a stretcher with an ambulance from the National Hospital, Abuja.
Metuh’s counsel, Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN) and Emeka Etiaba (SAN) asked the court for time to obtain further medical checks on his fitness to face trial.
Counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Sylvanus Tahir did not oppose the application.
Thus, the judge adjourned the case to March 14, 15 and 16 for hearing.
The EFCC counsel had earlier asked the court to revoke Metuh’s bail for being absent without a good reason and described the medical report brought by his lawyers as a piece of trash fit for the trash can, and pointed at his earlier application to be allowed to produce 10 more witnesses.
Metuh’s lawyers had cited a medical report from the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, Anambra State signed by one Dr Ekwuogu O.C. which diagnosed Metuh with a thoracic spinal disease.
