The much anticipated Lagos State Community Day for 2020 was held at the Police College Lagos on Tuesday, 22 December 2020 amidst glitz and glamour.
The event, which is organized by Lagos State Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs, was held with an utmost consideration and adherence to the COVID-19 social distance regulations, as every community from the nooks and cranny of Lagos state were duly represented.
The uniformity in appearance and coordination reflects the formidable unity that exists among these communities in Lagos, and the love extended among members of communities is second to none. Every community members and the executives from the ministry of local government and community affairs adorn, glowing blue and white Ankara which represent peace and love.
The governor of Lagos State represented by Secretary to the state Governor, Mrs Folasade Jaji,
Mrs Comfort Adeleke represented his wife, Ibijoke Sanwoolu
The event was chaired by commissioner for local government and community affairs, Dr. Wale Ahmed.
The event is also graced by white cap chiefs, and the Kabiyesi of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu
Alhaji Azeeze Amusa, was also at the event with his team of local advisory council.
Lagos State Safety Commission was on ground to give rules for guests at the event.
Lagos State Community day features competition from communities.
Speaking at the event, the chaiman of the occasion stated that the theme of the event, Promise mad, promise kept, more to come, is very apt and relevant as the present administration under the leadership of Mr Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has strated fulfilment of promises made to transform our rural communities, to reduce rural-urban drift and as well, to continuously engage our CDAs in meaningful discussion on how to promote the state government THEMES agenda.
He added that the activities lined up for 2020 celebration include: Community Health walk to promote good heath and fitness; visit and donation of food items and toiletries to social instititions to identify with the less-previledge in our communities.
“We also joined our muslim brothers and ssters at Secretarieat Central Mosque Alausa on Friday 18th December,2020 at 1.00pm for the Jumat prayer to thank the Almighty God for another celebration.
He commended the local government chairmen who have been supporting the CDAs in their respective councils and to also implore others to emulate their colleagues ahead subsequent events and boost the morale of thr CDAs to do more in their developmental projects by rewarding deserving communities for self-help projects they embark upon with branded news buses aas Start prizes for the first 3 communities and consolation prizes for 10 other CDAs
Speaking on how the projects were identifies, a 15-mmeber committee was inaugurated to monitor and inspect the projects across the 57 CDAs and Local governments.
The ministry used the report submitted by the Project Committee to evaluate the projects and arrived at the selected community that emerged as the winners of the star prizes
This is done to extend Government’s handshake to deserving communities for development partners in achieving the Lagos of our dream.
The governor has chosen this event as an extension of government recognition, support and encouragement for Lagos communities to do more developmental projects as partners.
While expressing his appreciation to the governor, the chairman assured the communities that Lagos state will be made as a model of other states in the Lagos.
Also while commending the governor for his many efforts, Alhaji Amzat Azeez, The chairman LCDA, also implored that the procedure of selection of winners should be reviewed and considered the category of urban, semi-urban and rural and levied on them accordingly. He also advised that the government take time to visit the newly inaugurated councils.
Wife of the governor, Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by Mrs Comfort Adeleke commended all the community members for preserving the core value of their communities and implore that each CDAs strive to support the state government by contribute their quota in the development of the state.
The governor, who spoke via zoom, commended the community members for their supports, and assured that all the projects embarked upon to deliver for all the 377 wards shall be accomplished before the end of the term.
Duly following the COVID-19 protocol, each local council and local government was represented by 5 members for the parade.
11 communities went home with cash prize of 500 thousand naira while 3 communities got brand new bus each.
