LATEEF ADEDIMEJI Now Sings AYINLA OMOWURA’s Songs At Parties

by Sunday Adigun

It is no longer news that star actor, Lateef Adedimeji is one of the top male actors rocking the make-belief industry. He has proved himself worthy of many accolades attached to his name. Ever since he gained popularity with his first major role in Yewande Adekoya’s 2013 movie title “Kudi-Klepto”, he has remained an outstanding actor till date, with many awards to his craft.

In recent times, this epitome of talent and humility has become the toast of many brands for ambassadorial deals. He has also become the face of many great movies, even on Netflix, with the movie “Ayinla”. There is no single doubt that Lateef Adedimeji has been gaining more ground in the Nollywood industry. His talent has really paved way for him and made him to wine and dine with kings.

Truly, the success of the movie “Ayinla” is no longer news. The movie has recorded many successes within a short period in the market. What is news is what Lateef Adedimeji is now doing by re-awakening the memories of late Ayinla Omowura. He has been seen performing many of the late musician’s songs at different parties back-to-back. Example of such can be seen at the just concluded K1 de Ultimate 50 years on stage anniversary, where he co-hosted with the sensational actress, Bukunmi Adeaga, otherwise known as Kie-Kie. The Ayinla movie star practically stole the spotlight when he thrilled guests with his special rendition of Ayinla Omowura’s songs, among others. He really impressed and treated the celebrant and other star guests like Femi Adabayo, Muyiwa Ademola etc, to a worthwhile performance. Adedimeji left the crowd dancing as he displayed his singing prowess to the audience and got appreciated for it.

After the video went viral on social media, a number of people were pleased by the display and shared their reactions. This has also opened another opportunity for the star actor, as many people have started calling him to compere their parties, which they believe will come with a total package, i.e. he is going to sing Ayinla Omowura’s song for their guests.

According to Lateef Adedimeji, the lead role he played in Ayinla came as a surprise to him. “It was the least of what I was expecting at this stage of my career. I had always prayed to work with Tunde Kelani; even if it was a cameo role in any of his movies”.

Speaking on the challenges he faced before he was able to deliver the role, he said “when the lead role came, I thought it was a dream. I did not believe it until I heard ‘action’ on the first day on set. It was challenging because I had not been a fan of Apala music and I never listened to it. It was when I got the script that I started listening to Apala songs. I had to do a lot of research because there wasn’t much documentation or video recording of any kind of Ayinla Omowura. All the characterisation I did was based on my own research and everything I had heard and read about him. It was quite a stretch for me. The musical part was also tasking because I had to learn his songs.

It was tough but at the end, I am glad it came out well”.

“Ayinla” is a film that tells the story of Nigerian musician, Ayinla Omowura, who used Apala music to address issues of contemporary society, commanding and criticising various governmental and individual acts.
