Lateef Adedimeji, the celebrated actor and filmmaker, is championing Ogun State’s rich cultural heritage with the upcoming premiere of his film Lisabi. Directed by Tolu Ajayi and written by Adedimeji himself, the film tells the story of the legendary hero Lisabi Agbogbon Akala and highlights his contributions to Egbaland. Set against the backdrop of the 18th-century Oyo Empire, it chronicles the journey of an Egba farmer who leads a rebellion against the oppressive Oyo regime, ultimately securing Egba’s independence after centuries of subjugation. The film is set to debut in Ogun State before its release on Netflix on September 27.
During his recent visit to Ogun State, Adedimeji, alongside his wife, Adebimpe, received enthusiastic support from the state government. Governor Dapo Abiodun praised the film, emphasizing the importance of storytelling in educating younger generations about historical figures like Lisabi, who is a key part of the region’s cultural identity.
In an interview following his meeting with the governor, Adedimeji expressed his gratitude for the support and shared his ongoing plans for a film village in Abeokuta. “We are here because Ogun is my state; it is where I am from. We have made a movie about one of our heroes, ‘Lisabi Agbogbon Akala,’ which is coming to Netflix on the 27th of September,” he said.
Adedimeji revealed his vision for a film village in Ogun State, stating, “We are currently building our own film village and would like to seek the government’s support to further develop it. This will allow us to attract filmmakers from other places to Ogun State, creating opportunities for them to shoot their films and explore what the state has to offer.”
“It is high time we established this in Ogun State. There are so many stories we can tell—stories of our heroes. It would not be right to hear that we are shooting these stories elsewhere, which is why we are creating our own film village right here, located after OGTV on Mile 6 Road, Ajebo Road”.
