Dr. Adekunle Hassan is the founder of the popular Eye Foundation Hospital in Lagos with an outlet in Ijebu-Ode. He is the Otunba Obaruwa-Baamole of Ijebu. He is an internationally acclaimed, Ophthalmic Surgeon with wide experience in Vitreo-Retina Surgery, Glaucoma, Anterior Segment, Cataract and Ocular Plastic Surgery. He graduated from the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Nigeria in 1976. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeon, Glasgow, UK, Royal College of Ophthalmologist, UK, West African College of Surgeons and the Nigeria Institute of Cost Management.
His training and experience span over Europe, America, Middle East and Africa. He established the Eye Foundation Hospital as the first Private Post-Graduate Training institution in Nigeria in 1993 and The Deseret Community Vision Institute in 2006.
These two institutions have trained over 100 Ophthalmologists, Community Ophthalmic Nurses and Other middle manpower ophthalmic professionals. He is the pioneer leader of Modern Ophthalmological Practice including Vitreo-Retinal Surgery in Nigeria. Dr. Hassan revolutionized Eye Health Care through Private-Public-Partnership, establishing a socio-entrepreneurship model of making quantitative and qualitative Eye Care available for both the rich and less privileged. He pioneered the first Private Group Practice in Ophthalmology in Nigeria.
He has over 100 publications, scientific papers and research papers to his honour. He has over the years received more than 30 academic, professional and society awards for his contribution towards the different spheres of life. He has been on the board of many national and international corporate and professional bodies.
The Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland Oba Dr. S.K. Adetona CFR, Ogbagba II, installed Otunba Dr. Kunle Hassan as the Otunba Obaruwa (Baa mole) of Ijebu, in recognition of his contribution to the progress of Ijebuland, on October 9, 2009.
He is a quiet Philanthropist. He is happily married to Yeye Otunba Adetola Hassan with 3 children.
Beautiful Yeye Otunba Adetola Hassan is his wife. She is a renowned manager, entrepreneur and astute administrator.
She has over 30 years’ successful involvement in management leadership roles. Her executive experience spans across different Healthcare business units which include Deseret International Hospital, Health Partners, Summit Healthcare International Recruitment and Consulting in England, Eye Foundation Hospitals, Summit Healthcare Pharmaceuticals Nigeria, Liahona Economic Development Foundation Nigeria, Deseret Eye Clinics, Parmalat Company, USA, as well as Non-Profit Organizations.
She obtained her Masters in Public Policy Administration (MPPA) – University of Missouri St. Louis, (UMSL) USA 1999.
She also has a Graduate Certificate in on Profit Leadership and Management, (UMSL) USA, which she obtained in 1999. She holds a Masters in Public Administration, from the University of Liverpool, United Kingdom (1984); a Post Graduate Diploma in Public Administration, from the Caledonian University Glasgow, United Kingdom (1982).
She is a State Registered Nurse in Ogun State, Nigeria (1980). Her professional careers span position as Chief Executive Officer (CEO.), Deseret International Hospital (DIH), (2007- 2015); Executive Director, Health Partners (HMO) (2006-2009); Managing Director, Summit Healthcare Pharmaceuticals Ltd (1997- 2017); Executive Director, Eye Foundation Hospitals Group (1993 to date). She was also Managing Director, Summit Healthcare International (1989-1993); Supervisor, Pamalat/Mrs. Allison Cookies, USA (1999-2000).
Yeye Otunba Adetola Hassan is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Consultants and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Cost Management.
She has attended several international courses and workshops on cost management as well as participating in the international workshop for Public administrators held in Ghana. She was awarded Membership of the Institute of Public Administrators Ghana in 2008.
She has won several leadership awards in recognition of her outstanding performance which includes “Best Distributor of the Year” for Alcon Laboratories, a Multinational Company, in 2004 and 2006 for her Pharmaceutical business ( summit Pharma).
The company also won an award for the Best Product sales in 2009 from Alcon Laboratories
She was conferred with a double title of Otunba (Obaruwa/Baamole) alongside her husband in 2009 in recognition of their immense contributions for the development and services to Ijebuland by Oba Dr. Sikiru Kayode Aderona, the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland.
She was nominated and awarded the prestigious “Women of Merit Gold Award” in 2015.
Yeye Otunba Adetola Hassan was awarded ICMA (Ijebu Imushin Community Merit Award), November 2016 – the highest and most prestigious award of Ijebu Imushin reserved for the eligible sons and daughters of the land, despite the fact that she is not from Ijebu.
