Meet The Newly Elected 33 OYO State LG Chairmen

by Damilare Salami
Seyi Makinde, Oyo LG CXhairmen,

The much talked about local government election in Oyo State has come and gone. The ruling party in the state, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has cleared all the thirty three seats into the local councils. Unfortunately, the main opposition political party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) didn’t participate in the process. In fact, the party did all it could to get the election postponed, in order for it to be included in the whole process by the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYIEC). The leadership of the party said they couldn’t be part of the preparation for the election because there was a court case challenging the illegal removal of democratically elected chairmen. The judgement of which has since been ruled in favour of APC at the Supreme Court.

Of course the Saturday May 22, 2021, Local Government election couldn’t be said to be hundred percent perfect, there were errors and pockets of violence in few places like Ibarapa East Local Government. As a matter of fact, the election of Ido was postponed till Wednesday 26th May due to non inclusion of Zenith Labour Party (ZLP)’s name on the ballot papers. PDP won in the long run.

What, however, remains very important now is the action of the newly elected Local Council Chairmen. As the closest persons supervising the closest arm of government to the people at the grassroot levels. The expectations are too numerous. Especially now that they are expected to be autonomous in running affairs of the councils. That probably explains why Governor Makinde, while speaking at the swearing-in ceremony for the local government chairmen, held at the House of Chiefs, Secretariat, Ibadan, charged the newly elected council bosses to replicate the people-oriented policies and good governance being implemented at the state level at the grassroots.
