The Endometriosis Support Group, Nigeria (ESGN) on Friday 17th November, 2023, unveiled and celebrated winners of its 2023 and 8th edition of ESGN Essay Competition, Secondary School Category to the world.
The winners emerged after the annual competition which was keenly contested by 94 participants cutting across the South West and South East part of Nigeria as well as Abuja. Coming top is Bolorunduro Oluwadarasimi, a student of All Saints’ College, Ibadan. Next is the duo of Leila Eneche from Vivian Fowler Memorial College for Girls and Opara Nmesoma Success from Anglican Comprehensive High School, Ipaja both emerged 1st Runners Up while Egbejule Sharon Sisanmi, a student of Anglican Comprehensive High School, Ipaja came 2nd Runner Up.
They were duly celebrated and rewarded. The winner was given a sum of 50 thousand Naira and a complete computer set with UPS while the 1st Runners Up and the 2nd Runner Up were rewarded with 30 thousand Naira and 20 thousand Naira respectively.
ESGN is a non-profit organisation committed to raising awareness on Endometriosis and providing support for those affected in the country. One of its means of ensuring adequate awareness is created through ESGN Essay Competition, which is usually held to engage female students of Senior Secondary School between SS1 and SS3.
Endometriosis is a disease in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus. It can cause severe pain in the pelvis and make it harder to get pregnant. Endometriosis can start at a person’s first menstrual period and last until menopause. It is characterised by excessive menstrual cramps, abnormal or heavy menstrual flow and pain during intercourse.
For the past 7 years, the organisation has been holding the essay to charge secondary school students on writing to showcase their knowledge about Endometriosis as the best script is being rewarded and crowned winner. They also smile home with cash prizes and get inducted as Endo Ambassadors.
This year’s competition wasn’t an exception to the previous ones, it’s the 7th and upgraded edition. It came with a carefully chosen topic, “Impact of Endometriosis on National Productivity”.
The organisers were impressed about the quality of essays they received which speaks volume of the impact of its awareness. They are happy students are becoming more aware of the ailment as they hope that they further help create awareness in their respective homes and among their peers in the school.
The winners also gave account of how the competition has opened their eyes to endometriosis which they confessed they never heard about. With a series of findings, they did while writing the essay, they all expressed optimism and their readiness to keep sensitising people around them about endometriosis.
