Back-to-back, he has been making waves in the industry.
Indeed, Kunle Afolayan can be described as the King of Filmmaking in Africa, having proved himself worthy. He has distinguished himself and carved a niche for himself. He has also set an unbeatable record with many of his classic projects.
No one tells the story of Africa like Kunle does. Whenever he’s set to go on location for a new movie, the whole industry must feel it. As you read this, Kunle is on location in Oyo town to shoot the continuation of his movie, Anikulapo. There is no denying that this epitome of greatness is one of the best filmmakers of all times.
He’s undoubtedly on top of his game. And he has been for the last 20 years. Respect for the story drives, his style, in every film. A style notable for use of natural and practical lighting, a subtle camera and innovative colour palettes.
Many actors, fans and movie buffs will tell you that Kunle Afolayan’s works are all exceptional work of creativity. With the successful production of, The Figurine (2009), Phone Swap (2013), October 1 (2014), The CEO (2016), and Citation (2020) he came up with Anikulapo that recently won him several award.
Kunle Afolayan is one of the few African filmmakers if not the only one, who brings but topnotch cast of high caliber personalities into his movie cast. It is also important to state that consistency in quality of the movies he produces is another key attribute that distinguishes Kunle Afolayan and qualifies him as one of the greatest filmmakers in Africa at the moment.
For him, it is double celebration at the moment. His Anikulapo movie recently won multiple awards at the just concluded AMVCA 9th edition. It won the following awards: “Best Indigenous Language (Yoruba); Best Overall Movie, “Best Writer, Best Sound Track, Best Sound Editor. He is also among the list of 2023 National Honours recipients (OON Honourary Award) by former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Now the next project is Anikulapo Series, Rise of the Specter, a Netflix Original. The series is coming after the multiple award winning success of the Anikulapo movie which ranked number I globally on Netflix with 8,730,000 views in less than 2 weeks.
Anikulapo Rise of the Specter takes viewers on a journey through time, exploring the Concept of reincarnation and the Idea that our Souls are connected across lifetimes. Rise of the Specter is Kunle Afolayan’s debut feature series with over 600+ cast and crew members, it promises to be both visually stuynning and emotionally powerful enough to keep you on the edge of your seat. The movie welcomes back some of the old cast and introduces some new ones.
