Festus Keyamo, minister of state for labour and employment, says Yohanna Shankuk, his driver was killed by a vehicle avoiding #EndSARS protesters on Wednesday.
Keyamo, who disclosed this in a tweet, said the incident occurred at Berger roundabout in Abuja.
The minister said Shankuk was walking to his (Keyamo’s) office when a vehicle taking a one-way lane ran him over.
According to him, the driver of the vehicle saw advancing protesters, made a U-turn and took a one-way route back.
“I regret to announce that my driver, Mr. Yohanna Shankuk, died yesterday in Abuja as a result of the protests,” Keyamo wrote.
“A vehicle that saw advancing protesters at Berger roundabout, made a U-turn, took the one-way back and ran over him as he was making his way on foot to my private office.”
Aggrieved Nigerians took to the streets in the past one week protesting against brutality and extrajudicial killing by operatives of the now-defunct special anti-robbery squad (SARS) of the police.
After days of protests, Mohammed Adamu, inspector-general of police, announced the dissolution of SARS on Sunday.
He said a new policing arrangement will be announced to fill in the gaps created by the scrapping of SARS.
On Tuesday, Adamu set up SWAT as a replacement to the now-disbanded SARS and said members of the new unit will commence training next week.
