Profiles of young Nigerian DJs are now on a meteoric rise and they are indeed getting due recognition just like the new waves of Afrobeats artistes that are rocking the international scene with their new sounds.
One of the progenitors of the new global movement is the skillful Aluko Samson Omobola, professionally known by his stage name “DJ Scoophy“.
DJ Scoophy kick-started his career in 2016 by playing around Virtual DJ (a software for DJs) while schooling at Federal Science and Technical College, Yaba.
He was born and raised in Ketu, Lagos State but hails from Osun State, Nigeria. He’s a street boy who has a love for music and is also passionate about being a known DJ. He honed his skills under the tutelage of the popular DJ Kaywise and graduated from Kaywise Academy in the year 2019. One of his mentors is DJ Obiondeck, from whom he also learnt a lot about the craft.
Talking about the projects he is currently working on, he stated, “I’m working on new mix-tapes and also working in collaboration with some artistes, so be expecting my new singles and hopefully an EP before the end of this year”.
Speaking further, “I’m also working on my United Kingdom tour with Nigerian-born, UK-based event organizer cum travel consultant, Billique. I will be playing for my fans in London, Manchester, and Liverpool among other cities”.
When asked what differentiate him from other young DJs and what makes a good DJ, he stated, “I would say my style of playing is way different, I’m an open format, DJ. I do not limit myself to a particular genre of music. I believe music is an act of creativity and it’s also a culture. I love to explore through music and learn about other people’s cultures. It’s really amazing”.
“If you want to become a good DJ, you have to be ready to learn and unlearn. Good DJs don’t take no for an answer. You have to trust in God, keep pushing, and get better at what you do day by day. And most importantly, be up to date, don’t get too comfortable and be ready to face challenges”.
DJ Scoophy has an impressive resume. He played at Simi’s “Can You Simi Now ” concert; he was the official DJ for Tecno Spark 10 Festival. He has also played for top celebrity artistes like Burna Boy, Peruzzi, Teniola, Bred, OdumoduBlvck, Badboy Timz, Pheelz, Blaqbone, Poco Lee, Seyi Vybes, and many more. He has also featured alongside veteran industry disc jockeys like DJ Kaywise, DJ Obi, DJ BigN and he is one of OBI’S House official DJs. He is also having multiple programs he anchors as a DJ on Soundcity TV.
DJ Scoophy who fans also called “Scoophy Snacks” because of his creative drum skills has released a series of hit mixtapes across multiple platforms and he’s surely one DJ that knows how to turn up and gets people onto the dance floor.
