For Maternal & Child Health in Ibadan
Omotayo Maternity in Ibadan is set to hold the 2nd Walk for Maternity & Child Health. Olapeju Agunbiade, the Convener of the Walk told CityPeople recently that Omotayo Maternity is ready for the event.
What are we to expect on that day, we asked her.? “All pregnant women at Omotayo and those that have delivered will be walking on Sat, Oct 21st from Omotayo at Oke Ado to Saint Anne’s School, Molete, Ibadan.
The walk is to emphasise the following: Let’s reduce the maternal mortality rate; pregnant women will have the right to adequate maternity care. It is not a luxury. It is entitlement. Pregnant women also need to appreciate the importance of regular and adequate antenatal care. The walk will shed more light on all of the above.”
We got her to tell us about Omotayo Charity Foundation and its Free antenatal care and free delivery. What does it mean?
REDUCING MATERNAL MORTALITY rate in Nigeria is high. The figures are scary. I can make a difference!! Together we can!!
Everyday, 830 women die of pregnancy-related causes in the world.
✅145 of these deaths occur in Nigeria.
✅Only 20% of health facilities offer emergency obstetric care.
✅Only 35% of deliveries are attended by skilled workers.
✅Nigeria is ranked among the countries with the worst maternal mortality rate. (WHO)
✅I would love maternal mortality in Nigeria 🇳🇬 to be reduced.
✅How can I achieve this?
✅Start by offering free antenatal care and delivery to one pregnant woman who wouldn’t have considered delivering her baby in a ‘hospital’ because of financial implications/constraints. Then another…….
✅I would love to make a little difference.
✅I am engaging and mobilising audiences like this message you are reading now to take action and raise funds that will support this maternal health project. Abiye Please donate whatever amount that you can afford.
✅This is what brought the idea of Omotayo Charity Foundation (OCF)
✅Abiye Lomo. Our new slogan. Launching it on Saturday, Oct 21. Women should deliver safely. Mother and baby – Alive and well!
✅Free antenatal care and free delivery started Feb 2020.
✅We have cared for over 2000 pregnant women and delivered approximately 1,500 babies FREE!!!
Eligibility adjusted to prevent abuse of this privilege.
Women who can afford to pay bills are made to pay. (Not added to figures)
❌Women who have 2 live children are also made to pay. (not added to Figures )
✅women who have benefitted once from the program are made to pay for delivery. We still offer them free antenatal care though.
✅Mandatory Vaccination free from birth till the first year of life.
✅My dream, my desire is that every woman in Nigeria will experience the joy of a truly safe, comfortable and satisfying birthing for herself and her baby. This is happening, would love to continue. A very big thank you to all my friends and families that stood by me till now. God bless you.

We got her to tell us about Olapeju Agunbiade and what she is determined to achieve with this initiative.
“O ga oo!! I am a woman who is very passionate about maternal and child health. My mother retired as a midwife. She founded Omotayo Maternity in 1976. I am her first child. I had a nursing background, then trained and lived in the UK as a midwife. I inherited Omotayo Maternity, and I have been shuttling since I took over. That is so draining, I must confess. Why did I choose the profession?? I honestly do not know. I ask myself the question every now and then, and the conclusion is always- Ise ori ran mi ni. Olapeju, come to terms with some facts and just get on with it. Living in Nigeria is a very big deal for someone who has lived more than half of her life in the UK. I have adapted, to a very large extent. Eventually, I have concluded and accepted that there are 2 sides to me. What I want to achieve is happening- women who are known for not bringing a baby home at the end of pregnancy have taken their babies home with their third, and fourth pregnancy. Women are going through a lot o!!! We have been able to give them tailored care to meet their obstetric needs based on their history. That is always always a very satisfying feeling. City People, what else can I ask for?? What else can I wish for??
