PROF. OLUWOLE AYOOLA ATOYEBI Celebrates @ 70

Professor ‘Wole Atoyebi is a Consultant Surgeon at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, a position he has occupied since 1990 and a Professor in the College of Medicine of the University of Lagos. He has occupied one leadership position or the other in virtually all recognized bodies in the medical profession in Nigeria and has recently completed a 4-year tenure as the College Registrar of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria. Before this appointment, he was the Provost of the College of Medicine of the University of Lagos (2009 – 2012) and at that time, he was the Chairman of Nigerian Association of Colleges of Medicine (NACOM), an Association of all provosts and Deans of medical schools in Nigeria.

 

Professor Atoyebi obtained the MB, BS degree with Honours from the College of Medicine in 1977 having passed all professional examinations with distinctions. He bagged the Fellowship of the National Postgraduate Medical College in Surgery (FMCS) in 1990 and thereafter the Fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS). He is also a Fellow of the International College of Surgeons (FICS) and similarly a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).

 

He has published several scholarly articles in both national and international journals. He is an examiner for both the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and the West African College of Surgeons and was an External Examiner to the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons. He has served in the past as the Faculty Chairman for the Board of Surgery at the National Post graduate Medical College of Nigeria, the President of the Nigerian Surgical Research Society and National President of the Nigerian Medical Association. He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Management (FNIM) and one of the Founders of the Nigerian Academy of Medicine and currently the Secretary.

 

Professor Atoyebi is quite conversant with activities of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN). He served as a member of the MDCN initially from 1992 to 1994 and subsequently for eight years continuously between 2000 and 2007 when he served as Chairman of several Ad-Hoc committees. At different times, he served as a Member of a number of Council’s Standing Committees/Organs like Registration Committee, Education Committee, Investigating Panel and the Disciplinary Tribunal. At the later part of his tenure, he was Chairman of the Education Committee of the Council till the Council was dissolved in November 2007. He has been one of the Chief External Examiners for the Assessment of Foreign Medical and Dental Graduates since 2018 and the Chairman, Committee of Medical & Dental Council’s committee on Remediation Attachment for Foreign Trained Medical and Dental Graduates from December 2020 – 2022.

 

He has served on several Ministerial and Inter-Ministerial Committees in the past including the Presidential Project Implementation Committee for the Refurbishment of Eight Teaching Hospitals between 2004 and 2006 and in 2016 served as Chairman, Ministerial Committee on the Restructuring of the Residency Training Programme in Nigeria.
