BERNARD ÓLABINJÓ SHOBÓWALE (BOBBY) BENSON was born on 11th April 1921. He died on 14th May 1983 at the age of 62 years.
Bobby Benson was a man whose influence and character pioneered and dominated the entertainment industry of West Africa, Nigeria and Ghana (Gold Coast).
He was a consummate entertainer and showman. A Master of his trade. He promoted the performing arts. He acted in films, TV, and on stage.
He was a talented multi- instrumentalist. Bobby played the Baritone Sax, piano, trumpet, guitar, and drums. He was a lead vocalist and Tap Dancer.
He worked with and trained many musicians, who later became legendary Band Leaders. People like Billy Friday, Roy Chicago, Zeal Onyia, Eddy Okonta, Bala Miller, Victor Ólaiya, and many others.
Bobby Benson, was known as father of Highlife Music in Nigeria. He was also a very successful entrepreneur and business man. He had one of the biggest musical instruments and equipment dealership in Africa. He was the first Nigerian to build and own an internationally rated Hotel (Hotel Bobby) and in-house night club (Caban Bamboo)
