Security concerns at Gateway Polytechnic: A call for urgent action

by Jessica Ofuoma

In a shocking incident, suspected armed robbers targeted students of Gateway Polytechnic (ICT), Sapaade, Ogun State, resulting in the tragic death of one student and leaving nine others injured, including a landlord. The attack unfolded in the early hours of Saturday, at the Larufi area of Ode Remo. This unsettling event occurred just a week after the school’s management temporarily closed the institution following student protests against the recent rape of female students.

The assailants, armed with guns, reportedly stormed the students’ hostel around 3 am, instilling terror as they unleashed their attack. Disturbing visuals from the scene depict shattered doors, broken windows, and walls marked with bullet holes. The criminals resorted to using heavy stones to break windows, gaining access to the hostels.

Tragically, one student lost their life in the attack, and the injured victims, including a landlord, were rushed to the hospital. Amidst the chaos, the criminals managed to steal a car to make their escape, adding another layer of concern to the incident.

This distressing event underscores a critical issue: the security of the students at Gateway Polytechnic is far from guaranteed. The vulnerability of the students has been exacerbated by the lack of adequate security measures, paving the way for such brazen attacks.

It is crucial to note that just a week before this incident, the school was closed for three days due to student protests against the rape of female students. This raises questions about the overall safety and security infrastructure in place at the institution. If the school premises had sufficient hostel facilities, students might not be compelled to seek accommodation outside the school, exposing them to potential dangers.

The tragic loss of life and the injuries sustained by students demand immediate attention from both the school management and relevant authorities. Enhancing security measures within the school premises should be a top priority. This includes investing in surveillance systems, increasing the presence of security personnel, and implementing measures to fortify hostel security.

Additionally, there is a pressing need for a thorough investigation into the incident to identify the perpetrators and ensure justice is served. Collaborative efforts between the school management, local law enforcement, and the community are essential to address this security crisis effectively.

As the Gateway Polytechnic community mourns the loss of one of its students and grapples with the aftermath of the attack, it is imperative that decisive action is taken to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. The safety and well-being of the students should be paramount, and every effort must be made to create a secure learning environment conducive to the academic pursuits of all students
